We Have Miles to go Before We Sleep

I’ve been spinning my wheels a little lately. Okay a lot. The Haditha story just flew all over me. The liberals/progressives, the MSM, the islamic masses have been having a feeding frenzy at the expense of our Soldiers and our nation.

They were very fortunate to have Murtha hand over an international soapbox to stand on.

These Soldiers have been declared guilty without benefit of trial. And the story has given tacit permission for the fabrication of numerous stories of the horrors of war being pinned on the broad shoulders of the American Soldier.

While the identity of the individual Soldiers has not been made public (as far as I know), their unit has, so they have been deprived of anonymity.

Even so, a global terrorism plot has been uncovered and foiled in Canada. One would think this would be all over the news. Hurrah for us …. mark one up for the good guys.

But no, it’s a footnote. It’s gotten coverage, but then back to the ‘failures in Iraq’, the ‘failing economy’, blah - blah - blah. Whatever can be twisted to prove that Bush has a ‘failed Presidency’.

So those arrested in Canada are being described as coming from a ‘broad strata’ of society. Today’s euphemism for muslims bent on destroying western society.

Riots in France are being downplayed and written about in terms of ‘youths’ rioting. If you dig enough you discover the ‘youths’ are muslim.

I keep puzzling over these things. I wonder why Americans, Brits, and other westerners would want to pacify the enemy while demonizing our Soldiers and their own countries.

Do they hope the alligator will eat them last?

Of course, a good part of it is desperation on the part of the democrats to regain a power base. But it’s more than that.

Yesterday I was reading John Stossel’s book, Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidity and I had one of those ‘ah-ha’ moments. I won’t go into all the details, but when interviewing American students as to why they score lower on testing the response was something to the effect, ‘The schools didn’t teach us what they should have’.

It was their fault. The schools fault. Someone else’s fault. Anyone else’s fault.

Ah - ha.

That’s it.

That paradigm has taken root in our society and the ramifications permeate throughout our society.

Life is hard. War is ugly. War is hell. These are ‘inconvenient truths’.

Somehow, somewhere along the line we got the idea that life is supposed to be easy, that we are supposed to be ‘happy’ all the time, that bad things don’t happen to good people and that someone ELSE is responsible for everything that happens. Even acts of nature, hurricanes for instance.

Somehow, somewhere along the line we forgot that wood has to be chopped to build a fire. We forgot that the earth needs tilling, seeds planted and a garden tended before we can enjoy the food the garden produces. We don’t think about all that has to be done so that we can press a button on our refridgerator door and have instant ice and water.

We want it all. We want it all right now. And we don’t want to be bothered with who had to do what for us to have it.

We have lost our moral compass. We have forgotten that there is value in gratitude and keeping promises. Talk of honor and patriotism is fodder for contempt, insults and ridicule.

‘Freedom isn’t free’ is not just a slogan, it’s a truth. It’s an inconvenient truth.

There is a global war on terrorism and keeping our heads in the sand won’t make it go away. Blaming our own countries won’t garner the favor of the enemy. Finding fault with our own Soldiers and every step we take to win this war won’t get the liberals the power they crave. Pulling out of Iraq will not end it, it will only prolong it and make us weaker. And finding Osama bin Laden isn’t the point. It’s bigger than one person and bigger than one terrorist group.

We have a long way to go. I hope we are in for the long haul.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

From a purely academic point of view future historians will find this period an interesting example of how manipulated perceptions struggled obstinately with suppressed reality for the center stage of the policy debate. Some of the questions that will be asked fifty years from now are: what was Scooter Libby really charged with? Is that all? How come millions of people could die in Darfur without anyone noticing? Why were people obsessed with the possible criminal behavior of a handful of Marines in Iraq and uninterested in why their wonderful universities and high schools  could produce kids who would be interested in blowing up buildings, spreading poison gas, or maybe shooting down airliners with surface to air missiles. And the most interesting thing about this period is that for a brief time, the manufactured perceptions almost looked like winning. Until reality weighed in.

Beth - I don’t know how I’ve missed your blog before but well, I did. You weren’t at the Milblog Conf were you? I don’t often get too many negative commenters but due to the TN brigade I’m now starting to get them. I get so bleepin mad I sometimes don’t even respond. I’ve about had it with the this defaming of the troops and Marines. I heard Lindsey Graham on FNS this morning and his sanctimonious half assed defense of the Marines just PO’d me. He could have said, we don’t have all the facts and just shut up. But no, he had to bloviate just so he could hear himself talk. That poor Marine company is screwed no matter if they’re innocent or guilty.
