It seems that a hollywood has-been is grabbing at headlines by encouraging men to rethink the definition of masculinity. It seems he doesn’t like the idea of our President being cowboyish. I have no idea what he has against cowboys. Cowboys are American as apple pie …. maybe that’s what he doesn’t like … that it’s an American thang?
It’s really kinda a hoot. Ethan Hawke, who is a b-list actor at best, thinks the Commander and Chief of the American military, the President of the most powerful nation in the world and is indeed, the most powerful man in the world, needs to go to war to feel like a ‘big man’.
I don’t know how to tell Ethan, but I don’t think being a ‘big man’ would be a problem for anyone in that position. Maybe Ethan is projecting a tad.
So how does Mr. Ethan ‘Big Man’ Hawke feel that masculinity should be redefined? He doesn’t really articulate his vision [I don't want to say this out loud cause I wouldn't want to hurt his feeling - him being sensitive and all - but he may not be able to articulate it]. I’m guessing it would be by having men become more like women.
London, July 8 (IANS) Actor Ethan Hawke has criticised US President George W. Bush’s decision to go to war in Iraq and feels American men should re-think the concept of masculinity.
Hawke said Bush’s attempt to be a big man prompted him to go to war, reported contactmusic.com. He said: ‘I’m from Texas. I love cowboy hats and riding horses. No American idealises all that more than I do. But when I see George W. Bush walking around in his cowboy hat, I feel it’s time for some new kind of masculine identity.’
Hawke urged American men to re-evaluate their masculinity because he fears that the men who took the country to war are misguided.
‘Masculine identity has been ruling the world for a long time. You could make a case that it was needed at one time to keep people safe, build buildings, make roads and conquer nature. But that masculine thing has also led us to war. Men like to fight. But, because of globalisation, I think, in some fundamental way, ‘Might makes right’ is over.’ [source]
I don’t have anything personal against the metro-sexual’s like Hawke. Apparently a lot of rodeo drive-type women like their men to be narcissistic, pretty and well-coifed. Women like eye-candy and trophies as much as men.
I personally don’t prefer men who have more hair and body care products than I do. But, hey, that’s just me.
I think it’s sad that people seem to think that in order to value femininity they have to devalue masculinity. But that’s for another post.
So Sister Toldjah has sent out a challenge for bloggers to show support of ‘old style masculinity’.
My first instinct is to post photos of my father, husband and son - who in my mind are ‘old style masculine’. But I thought a few famous people might be more interesting for others.
What defines masculinity?
How about a man who’s masculinity is not threatened by standing in the background while a woman takes center stage.
Then there’s the man who works hard at his job to provide for his family, day in and day out. Who makes sure they have what they need.
Men who are faithful to their wife and children, who will defend their family’s with their lives. Men who honor the women in their lives without giving up their own identity as males.
That’s just a few off the top of my head.

At least the president does something more than ACT (poorly might I add) like a hero. More than we can say for E. Hawke.
It’s funny you bring this up. When I was back on R&R with my wife in Germany recently we had a talk about the lack of masculinity in Germany. We both noticed that a lot of Germany women would rather hook up with American men rather than German men. I asked one of her German friends once why this was and she said that, “Americans are crazy, they’ll do anything for you. They’re real men.”
Isn’t that the truth E.L. …
Bandit - that’s kinda scary. Do you think we depleted the German gene pool after 2 World Wars? (btw - my son’s home base is in Germany too)
Beautiful! A great post.

Beth,
Trackbacks should be working now at chez Diva. Thanks for bringing the problem to my attention - didn’t even realize it was missing. Now I understand the “unexplained” traffic from some far left sites

You forgot Bruce Willis …
Thanks hdw.
I got the t/b over there diva - thanks
I thought about Bruce Willis Right Wing Prof - but it was LATE and I got tired. Should I add him???
You speak the truth. Funny how much alike we think.
By the way, Contosh has more than courage. He has steel for nerve. That fella is Superman, The Lone Ranger and Captain America all rolled up into one Marine. Chesty Puller aint got nothin’ on that fella.
Why do we listen to actors?
They are the only people in the world whose job it is to PRETEND TO BE OTHER PEOPLE. In other words, they’re not famous for who and what they are, but for who and what they pretend to be. A good actor is talented and should be respected for his abilities, but should not be listened to in any field outside of acting.
It’s arguable that politicians lie (provable, even). But with a politician, you eventually get to see the reality in action (voting records). With an actor, you get nothing. Hell, how do we even know they really feel that way. They could just be… acting.

I loved this little ditty. TB’d it but of course I highly doubt if it worked. I put up some pics to choose between a Metrosexual ride of a Masculine ride!

OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good job Beth, I think you have a handle on it!
And, um, Ethan Hawke thinks HE’s the definition? eeeewwwww
So does he consider Saddam or Kim Jong Il or Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who abuse, oppress, torture, starve and murder their own people to be “masculine” and is he calling for them to get in touch with their feminine side? Or is it just GWB that bothers him?
I have a household of manly men — and all 4 have or are serving in the military — they embody courage, strength, intelligence, integrity, honor… are quite comfortable wearing cowboy boots and hats… but were unashamed to cry at thier own or their sister’s weddings.
You’ve been in Hollywood too long, Ethan. and we know that there’s a lack of masculine idols there!
(and yes, please add BeeDub!)

Some Soldier’s Mom - apparently it’s just GWB that bothers him! Or a lot of those types. I never see them complaining about Saddam or Castro or anyone else like that ???

ethan hawke??? never heard of him…
Fantastic post Beth! I was raised by one of those “act quietly / don’t blow your own horn” type masculine guys, glad to know we’re still in style somewhere! While I respect the freedom of an actor to voice their opinion, I’d hardly consider any of them an expert in world affairs. They have ther right to say their piece, and I have the right to not put my money in their pocket. Ain’t America grand?

Nice tribute, well done. Metros like Hawke need to take a step back and realize that without real men who have the ability to stand on a line and say “no more,” faux men like him wouldn’t have the pedestals to stand on.
Nicely summarized. The Libs want girly men that listen to their BS I guess.
Nice tribute and authentic support, it seems to me. Thanks for linking to my open post. Come back any time!

Awesome post–I love it!!!!!!!
I like Ethan Hawke. He speaks his mind. I think he has something to say. This mob-hate thing that he deals with on a daily basis most be slowly murdering his soul. Hey sheep! shame on ye.
