We’ve all heard about the US judge who is taking the Korean immigrant owners of a dry cleaning business to court over allegedly losing his trousers. He was suing them for $64 million but has since lowered it to $54 million.
He has calculated this amount based on various and sundry legalize he’s been able to come up with. For example, there is an amount for the number of days a sign claiming ’satisfaction guaranteed’ has been in their business window multiplied by three for the three owners and the fact he has not been satisfied.
And of course, his emotional suffering over the lost pants.
This case went to court in Washington D.C. today. Marc Fisher of the Washington Post describes Pearson’s appearance in court like this ….
And Pearson, who by his account has spent more than 1,400 hours preparing his case, arrived in a black pinstripe suit. I hope he won’t sue me if I mention that the pants could have used a pressing.
“Never before in recorded history have a group of defendants engaged in such misleading and unfair business practices,” Pearson said in his opening statement. You don’t get a lot of firsts in recorded history in D.C. Superior Court, though I should add that Marion Barry was in the building for his day in traffic court, and the pants suit easily outdrew the ex-mayor-for-life.
The “willful and malicious conduct” Pearson described consisted of this: In 2005, Pearson was starting his new job as a judge and therefore needed to start wearing suits again after a couple of years of unemployment. He brought five suits in for alterations because he’d put on 20 pounds and needed to have the pants let out. Four suits came back fine. One came back without the pants.
Pearson says the Chung family — Korean immigrants who came here from the charcoal factories of Seoul in 1992 and now own three cleaners, including the one a short walk from Pearson’s place in the Fort Lincoln section of Northeast — had no intention of living up to the sign in their shop that said “Satisfaction Guaranteed.” Therefore, Pearson said, he had no choice but to take on “the awesome responsibility” of suing the Chungs on behalf of every resident of the District of Columbia.
He had to leave court at one point in tears, he was so emotionally distraught.
The fact that this case has made it to court is appalling. The judge is an idiot who is using the system for his own purposes. I’m sure he’s aware he will never get that kind of money from this immigrant family, so I can’t imagine what his purposes are. But I’m sure he has them. And to think he sits on the bench of justice in our country!
Maybe he’s a racist who hates Asians. Maybe he hates legal immigrants. Maybe he just wants whatever bit of money he can get out of the Chungs. Maybe he wants his fifteen minutes of fame. Maybe he’s just a jerk who decided he’d get back at the Chungs for real or imagined insults by hammering them through the legal system. Guess that’ll show them!!
Sadly, since he’s a sitting judge in the Washington D.C. district, he probably plays golf with the other judges there so the Chungs are in for a fight.
This has been terribly expense for the Chungs and for the tax payers who are footing the bill for this circus brought about by Judge Roy Pearson. Judge Roy Pearson is not the victim here.
If there is any justice, he will have to pay court expenses to reimburse the tax payer for his exploitation of the system and he’ll have to repay the Chungs their legal expenses and for the pain and suffering they have endured over the past two years.
I had a terrible time finding a picture of Judge Roy Pearson on the internet. I found a lot of pictures of the Chungs, the defendants in this case, but no pictures of Roy Pearson. I suppose he’s being protected since he’s the ‘victim’ in this case.
I did find the drawing below. This is from his appearance in court today. He’s on the left. His name is Judge Roy Pearson. He’s an administrative law judge in Washington D.C.

I hope Mr. Pearson doesn’t sue me for putting his picture on the internet!!!!

Someone needs to take this clown out behind the court house and just ‘bitch slap’ the living hell out of him, he IS an IDIOT…
Now, he can sue me too…

here comes the pic (and a video clip)!
Hopefully, this guy will be kicked off the bench.

I could not have said it better…did you read my mind? ;->
The PTB that allowed this lawsuit to go forward should have their asses kicked. Think how many protective vests the money already tied up in this damn thing would buy. The bobdamn a-hole should be ashamed! (:-&
I have a phot of him up at Roy Pearson is an Idiot
Roy L Pearson Update…
Roy L. Pearson, who filed a $67 million lawsuit against the dry cleaning business that lost his pants, has lowered his demand. Now, he’s asking for only $54 million, according to a May 30 court filing in D.C. Superior Court….
He’s not a real judge. he’s an administrative court judge.
Maybe he’s trying for his own TV show? :-B
Judge Roy Pearson and his $64 Million Pants Have Made the French News…
Does it get any worse than this? A frivolous lawsuit by an insane ‘official’ gets made fun of on the French news!!!
The FWEENCH news!
First the Chungs have had to put out tens of thousands of dollars to defend themselves. Second, the tax…
Kate! I think you might be right!! lol
Kate said, “Maybe he’s trying for his own TV show? ”
I have the title: “Judge Idiot’s Court–where insanity worse than the Ninth ‘Circus’ Court prevails”. Mass Media Podpeople ought to jump all over this idea…
Judge Roy Pearson, according to reports on Fox, is broke. He had maybe less than $200.00 in his checking account before this. He has tons of bills. He’s doing this for the money, no other reason.
Frankly, I hope the case gets tossed or found in the immigrants’ favor resulting in the suing judge getting strongly reprimanded by the presiding judge. I’d love to see an investigation on his abuse of the system with this case. And maybe removed from the bench.
This guy represents a lot of what is wrong with this country today. We havea judge abusing the legal system this blatantly. He’s trying to ruin this Korean couple’s lives. I think it’d be only fitting if the rest of society did the same to him.
First, he should lose his job, no question. Second the Korean couple should turn around and sue this clown for every penny he has. He deserves to be financially ruined. Third, this guy should be made into a social pariah. His picture should be posted around DC with slogans like “public enemy” and “legal criminal.” Restaurants should refuse to serve him. People should spit at his feet as he walks by and mock him.
We need to send the message that bullies and fools like Pearson will not be tolerated. We need to make an example of him.
This worthless fool is an idiot! Basically a total racist with a hatred for Orientals. Such a racist like this should be summarily disbarred, fined and flogged. He doesn’t have a hint about the meaning of “integrity.”
As you are undoubtedly aware, a $54 million lawsuit was recently brought in DC District Court against a small neighborhood drycleaners over a pair of alleged lost trousers. While the Court found resoundingly in favor of the business owners, Jin and Soo Chung, their ordeal is not yet over—they have drained their saving accounts contesting this frivolous lawsuit, and they have racked up over $100,000 in legal expenses.
In order to help the Chungs defray their legal bills, ILR and the American Tort Reform Association are co-hosting a fundraiser on Tuesday evening, July 24 at 6 p.m. at the US Chamber Building in Washington, DC. Unfortunately, businesses large and small across America must deal every day with similar extortionist tactics from some plaintiffs’ lawyers. The collective outcome is not justice, but lost jobs, ruined businesses and billions of dollars in lost economic opportunity.
