I still, to this day, remember Peter Jennings coverage of this as it was unfolding. I know Peter Jennings has since died, however, I never liked him so why pretend I did now because the press has anointed him with journalistic sainthood since his death. I was dumbfounded that Jennings was doing what the talking heads do when some horrific live event is happening on TV - talking off the top of his head cause they can’t seem to stand not filling in every moment of air time with the sound of their voices. A television reporter talking off the top of his head has been proved repeatedly to not be a good idea. In this case, it was certainly not a good idea. I remember his astonishment that the Russian Soldiers were arriving at the school barefooted and with their shirttails flying behind them. He commented on that a couple of times as the videos showed these men running towards the school and sometimes having to be restrained.

Peter commented on their disheveled appearance and their lack of discipline with contempt in his voice.

These men were not the Russian military, of course, they were the fathers of the children who had been taken hostage and were desperately trying to reach their own children to save them. This concept was apparently foreign to someone like Peter. It seemed, in his world, there would always be someone to come to the rescue who was well trained and well groomed. It made me wonder if Peter Jennings would hop up out of his bed and throw on some pants and go running to the neighborhood school to try to save a child held captive by islamic jihadists. Or would he wait for someone else to come to the rescue and find fault with them for how they helped.

Still, the video is a pretty vivid reminder of just who our enemy is and what they are willing to do.

I still don’t really understand why this act didn’t mean war for Russia. Why didn’t they retaliate? Why have they still not answered this horrific act perpetrated on them by islamic jihadists? My Beloved Curmudgeon says they don’t have the power to retaliate any more. Maybe he’s right. I don’t know. Its unconscionable that they have not done nothing in response to the jihadists seige of Beslan school, shooting children in the back as they tried to run away, torturing and killing the children of Russia.

We need to remember that this is our enemy too.
