I’m Glad Barack Hussein Obama Won’t Wear the American Flag Lapel Pin

I’m glad that Barack Hussein Obama is refusing to wear the American flag lapel pin. Frankly, I think its silly that he decided to make a statement of NOT wearing it and that everyone is jumping on the bandwagon to make a bigger issue of it. Including me by writing this post.

I’ve seen articles and posts about that lapel pin that are extreme at both ends of the spectrum. I don’t see the reason for the hoopla. I didn’t like the implication of one of the reasons he gave for not wearing the pin. Among other things he said, ‘I’m going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great ….’. Will make this country great? Yeah, I didn’t like that at all. But he’s a candidate, not the President. We don’t have to vote him into office.

Barack Obama

I admit that it seems odd to me that someone who wants to be President of the United States would have an issue with wearing an American flag pin, but then Obama wasn’t raised in America, so why would he? When he was asked about the absence of the ever-present pin on his lapel he chose to wax philosophic about it rather than just giving a simple answer. That long explanation has turned into a tidal wave of criticism of him for not wearing the pin.

I don’t think him wearing the pin or not wearing the pin has anything at all to do with his patriotism. I don’t think it has anything to do with anyone’s patriotism. I also don’t think that he talked too much about it because he’s not sophisticated enough to understand that by talking about it he made it into an issue.

I think he made an issue of not wearing the pin to appeal to a segment of his hoped-for contingency. Its just politics.

My father was a patriot. He was a Marine in the South Pacific in World War II. All of my uncles, who were of age, fought in that war. My parent’s friends and relatives lived through that time with uncertainty as to its outcome. They sent their men to war and some didn’t come back and some came back broken. They all fought under and for the American Flag.

My husband and many of my friends fought in Vietnam, under and for the American Flag. My son is fighting in Iraq now under and for the American Flag and all that it stands for. Many of my childrens’ friends are also fighting in what is called the Global War on Terrorism.

My father was raised in a disciplined family and the Marine Corp further solidified his sense of discipline and hard work. I didn’t know it growing up, but as an adult I can look back and see so many ways that discipline permeated his life. When we went camping we had to have the campground ’squared away’ before we could do anything else. We did our work before we played. When he raised the American Flag on a pole he had erected in our front yard, it was done properly and with reverence. Even as an older man, he went through the ceremony of raising that flag and lowering it with dignity. He never handled it carelessly. I remember as a young child standing next to him and immolating his actions. He called me his ‘little helper’ and he taught me how to fold the flag, how to never let it touch the ground, how to not leave it out at night or in bad weather. He taught me how to respect it.

The flag is just a piece of cloth. but its a piece of cloth that stands for something. It represents all that is good about our country. It represents, freedom, our national pride, our national strength and the blood of every patriot who has died to defend her.

Yes, its a symbol and some think symbols just don’t matter. But I think of Francis Scott Key who penned the words to the Star Spangled Banner and the meaning that flag had to the people who fought so valiantly for our right to be a nation. Through the rockets red glare and bombs bursting in air they were able to see that the American flag still stood. That piece of cloth meant they were not defeated and gave them renewed hope. Its a symbol that means something.

I’m glad Obama won’t wear the American flag on his lapel. That’s the same flag that has draped the coffin of every American who has given his life in battle for this country. It represents too much to be used in a political game.

He was asked about his lapel and the fact that he didn’t wear a flag on it. He didn’t just come out with it.

    Beth, I couldn’t agree more.
Our fathers sound quite similar( tho mine was Navy ). We were awakened every morning to “hit the deck ! ” Soetimes, I miss hearing that as much as I used to dread it.
I’m glad the sob doesn’t wear it…I don’t think he has the right to, really.
I believe you have to love and honour this country and it’s service personel to be a real patriot. he is not. Neither is that gawd awful broad( Bill’s wife )

If he refused to wear the flag, he doesn’t deserve to serve the American people. Period.

  6. Leigh says:

He just “solidifies” why we don’t need another “idiot” in the white house….he doesn’t deserve it. Obviously he doesn’t give a damn about the history behind the flag and the red stripes which now represent the heart, soul and blood of the American men and women who have died for our country and who continue to ensure our freedom with their service.
so we can enjoy our lives… couldn’t agree with you more.

I would like to know what chapters of The Blue Star Mothers are violating the “own creed” of not being political. How dare you use your forum to point to any political webpage or hint your political choice in a candidate.

Marie, speaking of ‘how dare you’ - how dare you come to my blog and point your finger at me. I could go to your blog and criticize you for all the religion you have your blog covered up with. Do the pictures of Jesus on your blog make it okay for you to come here and spew hate-filled rhetoric at me? Since your blog is religiously oriented, does that mean you are representing everyone in Christianity? Of course it doesn’t, any more than my being a Blue Star Mother means I represent all Blue Star Mothers.

I have every right to post whatever I want to on my blog, just as you do on yours.

Plenty of Blue Star and Gold Star Mothers talk about their political views. Are you that upset with Cindy Sheehan or is it just Blue Star Mothers who are on the right side of things?

If you don’t like my blog than stay on your own. If you don’t like this post, you should see some of the others I’ve written! lol

Riders who point to the stars
    By Marie Jon’

If you have not already heard of the Blue Star Mothers, please pay attention. They began their organization on January 22, 1942. Captain George H. Maines came up with the idea to form The Blue Star Mothers after sending out a request in the Flint News Advertiser. The story asked mothers of servicemen to fill out an information packet and return it to the address that was given in the flyer. Surprisingly, more than 300 mothers responded.

They held their first meeting at the Duran Hotel, in Flint, Michigan. Growing very rapidly, the Blue Star Mothers soon became a permanent organization, as mothers became more and more interested.

On February 6, 1942, the organization was officially entered in the Congressional Record. The initial chapters were formed in Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, New York, Oregon, and California. More chapters soon sprang up in Iowa and in Washington, DC. By June of 1960, the organization was chartered by the United States Congress.

The Blue Star Mothers worked voluntarily through all the tough times of World War ll. They volunteered in hospitals, and at train stations. They sent care packages to troops who then were working with America’s Homeland Security. In recent years, this marvelous patriotic group has grown.

Today, the Blue Star Mothers have chapters all over the USA. These incredible mothers have pride in the fact that their children, and others, are protecting our freedom during a time of war. The organization gives support to active duty men and women serving their country. The Blue Star Mothers promote patriotism as they assist veteran organizations. They stand at the ready to give of their time in whatever capacity, all in the belief of keeping America strong.

These self-sacrificing mothers support each other emotionally, as well as give aid to each other in any way that is necessary. Sadly, their sons and daughters who have volunteered their service to their country do not always come home alive. Many that do return suffer severe physical disabilities after they are released from the armed forces.

The Blue Star Mothers work with various government agencies, as well as the Veteran’s Administration behind the scenes. They often direct families to the correct departments to receive help for their wounded sons or daughters. They are constantly raising money and giving what they can to the families of the troops.

Lately, the public has become aware of a group that has shown up at the funerals of America’s fallen heroes in order to protect the families. Protect from whom, or what , you say? Unfortunately, there are people in the country who wish to show their utter lack of dignity and display their disdain by protesting at the funerals of the men and woman who have valiantly fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.

These decidedly un-American groups are often confronted by counter-protesters in the form of motorcyclists — The Blue Star Riders and The Patriot Guard Riders. They attend the funerals to help maintain the dignity of the service, and protect the grieving families. In a peaceful manner, they keep the protesters “invisible” from the eyes of the grieving families. Both groups are composed of men and woman from all walks of life. Many are veterans, and many other’s are fathers and mothers who have loved ones that are serving, and have served.

Beginning in California, the Blue Star Riders were organized by a Vietnam Veteran named Richard “Wolf” Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton took an interest in the troops because of who he is. As a veteran, Hamilton vowed that the liberal press would never again destroy the valor of those who came home after serving their country.

The Blue Star Riders began their existence with a torch ceremony called “The Ceremony Torch Circle.” This is done to pay tribute and to honor those who have sacrificed by giving their all for the good of American. The torch represents the everlasting light of the soldiers’ lives who have died for freedom. Their lives will be written in the Lamb’s book of life. (Revelation 20:12)

Born in New York City, Hamilton joined the service at the age of eighteen to serve in Vietnam. When he left to serve his country, people where already — and openly — maligning American soldiers. They disparaged returning Vietnam soldiers by calling them “Baby Killers.”

One can thank the likes of former Democratic presidential front-runner Senator John Kerry for that, as well as those that populated (and still do) the mainstream media. Today, we see the same disgraceful pattern being shown to our military men and women through the media, and Democrats like Congressman John Murtha.

But the efforts of Hamilton and the Riders are somewhat unique, for one of their jobs is to be within the public eye and bring attention to the Blue Star Mothers.

To the patriotic men and woman throughout America, I would say this: Do not presume that the “other guy” will do the heavy-lifting of supporting our armed services, and their families. We have to keep America strong by supporting the mothers and fathers of our troops. Help support groups such as The Blue and Gold Star Mothers financially, and give them your heartfelt thanks. As patriotic Americans who believe in our armed services, we must lift up and champion all organizations that give the much-needed support to these families of our fallen heroes.

There is an element in this country that originates from the political left, and it is determined to undermine the country. We are at war with terror. Yet, one would think upon hearing the stridency of the left that the real enemies are that of George W. Bush and all branches of the armed services. The Blue and Gold Star families understand this better than anyone.

It is time for the rest of America to step up. Shake the hands and thank any serviceman and woman you see in the airports traveling to and fro. Teach your children well about respect for those who are doing the most to bring peace to this turmoil and troubled world. God bless the United States armed forces, The Blue Star Mothers, The Gold Star Mothers, The Blue Star Riders, and The Patriot Guard Riders.
