Major Brian Dennis was serving in Iraq when a local dog took up with him. The dog’s ears had been cut off when it was a pup so Major Dennis named him Nub. Nub came around for months and obviously liked hanging out with the Marines. One day Major Dennis found a deep puncture wound on Nub. It had been inflicted on Nub with a screwdriver. Dennis and the other Marines nursed Nub back to health. No wonder Nubs loves his Marines and was willing to do whatever he had to do to find them when their unit was relocated …..
Major Brian Dennis, while serving in Iraq, found a dog who had his ears cut off as a pup and named the little guy nubs.
Over a period of months, the animal came around, befriending Dennis and his fellow Marines. During one visit, Dennis found Nubs with a deep puncture wound on his left side. He later learned the injury was inflicted by a screwdriver. He helped nurse the dog back to health.
The time came, however, for Dennis’ unit to relocate 70 miles from Nubs’ home fort. Keeping nubs was against the rules so he had to leave the dog behind. As always, Nubs sprinted alongside the Hummers as they pulled away for what Dennis assumed was the last time he would see the dog.
Two days later, Nubs wandered inexplicably in below-freezing conditions into Dennis’ new camp, shocking the Marine unit. “I won’t even address the gauntlet he had to run of dog packs, wolves, and God knows what else to get here,” Dennis wrote. “When he arrived he looked like he’d just been through a war zone.”
Nubs’ miraculous journey forced the Marine’s hand, and Dennis and his fellow Marines unanimously decided to keep the animal, building a doghouse at the camp. When two military police officers told Dennis the dog could not stay at the camp, he decided the only way to properly keep the animal was to get it to the United States.
After raising money and setting up a home with a friend back in the states, Nubs will arrive in the US this weekend.

Awwww…dammit…this made me cry. Our Troops are just too wonderful for words !
Hello fellow dog lovers, my name is Heather and I am part of the Bring NUBS to America clan. NUBS is in great hands now, Brian has made sure of that. There is a certified trainer set up to help NUBS transition to his King of the Beach status and a backbone of amazing NUBS and Brain supporters that are going to make sure NUBS is taken care of until the two can be reunited. I am sure you will see follow up once the two are together again as the media is hounding for follow up stories.
I did want to let everyone know as I am combing the net that Brian is NOT raising anymore money for NUBS so please do not listen to anyone who says they are collecting for the cause. They are scammers and in my mind are bad people trying to take advantage of a nice story. Brian really appreciates all the offers but he has told us all that NUBS is his dog and his responsibility and will take care of the rest of the financial needs for NUBS. I can not put words in Brian’s mouth but if you still feel the need to donate I am sure your local Humane Society or Animal Prevention Organization would appreciate any donations made in honor of NUBS. Otherwise your good thoughts sent to the two soul mates is enough I am sure.
great story, gotta love those Marines !!!
Whose a good puppy? Yes, you are, yes, you are!
Web Reconnaissance for 02/18/2008…
A short recon of what?s out there that might draw your attention updated throughout the day?so check back often….
This is very touching. It just shows that undying love that animals have for their caretakers and how much they need someone to love and take care of them. This was a wonderful story.
I just saw this on our local KUSI news in San Diego and with tears of happiness for Nubs and Brian..
I am so happy that Nubs is coming home to live with Brian in San Diego!!
This is an incredible story and Nubs was meant to find Brian..and Brian was meant to find Nubs.
I have one of the world’s most famous dogs but I gotta tell you that Spudgy would gladly step aside for a dog like Nubs..
God Bless our Marines!

I rescued a female dog from Kuwait during Desert Storm. The arabs were using dogs as target practice in the desert between Kuwait and Saudi, just north of Al-Fahad highway. I swiped her in my jeep before they shot her. The best thing I did in my life. Hayla is my best friend. She is about 15 years old now and still going strong! I did some research on dogs from that area and discovered that my dog(Hayla) is a Canaan. Nubs is also from the Canaan breed. Canaan is a very ancient dog of the Israeli’s, known for their intelligents and tracking abilities. The Arabs also used them in pre-islamic times as herd dogs and guard dogs. Now they abuse and neglect them. I would like to get hold of the jerk that cut Nubs ears. I would cut his right hand off so he could eat with his left:-) Look the breed up it is very interesting. Major Dennis will find this dog to be a very loyal and wonderful guardian. Take care of Nubs you have rescued a diamond in the rough.
I am a catholic, a Vietnam Veteran US MArines and I have many dogs myself. But again and again I sometimes felt ashame that we human could come short in our loyalty, faith and love compare to these dogs…..
Barbaric are those who eat dogs…
About MArines….well, you seen it, again and againt there is that little extra ooomph that make them stand out around the world. Huuurah!
Remember for God and COuntry….forget politics.
I’m praying that Major Brian Dennis and Nubs will soon to be together. God Bless our Marines. This is a touching and a happy ending, also.
A Letter from a Green Beret…
I received a very sad email from the Gathering of Eagles today. It is very important that you read it. If not for yourself, then read it for the men and women who are fighting to keep this country free so that you have time to visit my s ……
Guys like Major Dennis make the world a better place. The more “civlized” and comfortable the world becomes, the more advances in technology are achieved, the harder the world is on animals. Animals are good, implicitly. Dogs are even better than that.
Dogs are amazing creatures. They just want to be dogs, and be with and please people. Strays, give a stray a home, and you have a loyal friend for life. Some strays recognize love & kindness in a human immediately. Others take longer. But once that happens, that dog only wants to, has to be with that person. That’s enough for it to be happy.
It’s fitting and admirable that Major Dennis did anything & everything necessary to get Nubs to San Diego and reward that quality and love Nubs has displayed. And also admirable that his family and friends helped financially. I wish the Major a safe return home, & a great long life to both he & Nubs.
Lost Dog Blues, a song I wrote about this subject & people like Major Dennis , can be heard on Rhapsody , iTunes,Tradebit, etc. 40 some odd digital sites. The Artist is Larry Thurston. CD title: School For Fools. Lost Dog Blues. Levon Helm, from The Band, is the drummer. It can also be heard free at http://www.live365.com/cousinmoe
Major Dennis, I salute you. and Nubs!
Major Dennis is the kind of person I wish a lot of humans can be their are so many few like him who would be risking his life to safe our freedom and have time to share with a dog, those are man’s best friend and I am glad Nubs find somebody to love him even though bad things, cruel things were done to him. I am an animal advocate, I luv dogs, cats (have three of my own which I would give anything to take care of them if they needed it even give up my own food so that my kitties would eat themselves. But thank god I live in this country of so much freedom, love from family and health, and a job to be able to provide for my animals as much as I can. I wish Major Denis a safe return and thanks for fighting for all our freedoms and I hope Nubs is reunited soon with him but I know his family is taken good care of him while he returns(soon I hope)
Regards,

What a wonderful & touching story. It is nice to see a postive story actually make it to the media. I pray that Major Dennis makes a safe return to the US and to Nubs. God Bless All Our Troops. Semper Fi!!!!
Better keep an eye on that dog when he reaches the States, wouldn’t want him to try to find his way back to Iraq, heh.
yeah aren’t they great?
save a dog, kill an iraqi
Great story. Our guys are not only trying to protect us and other nations, but find enough room to help out four-legged friends as well.
ooo thats so good, good on yous boys
can i have him
Thank god for stories like this that take some of the sting out of the horrible atrocities that are being committed on a daily basis. As a veteran of Desert Storm, it becomes very disheartening to realize that this “war” has been going on for get ready for it…. 19 years now. There’s just something about basic human kindness that makes me believe that we might just beat the neo-con corporate fascists that have taken over our country.
I love this story. Dennis,Nubs and the rest of the soldiers are in my thoughts and prayers. I am proud to be an American and proud of you!
So…dogs are worth more then Iraqis? They kill humans but still love dogs?
How does this influence the ACTUAL YOUTUBE videos of marines killing puppys (throwing them off cliffs), raping/killing women in front of families, and other such atrocities? This article made me sick…
it does not take the “sting” out for me justinjoeindenver….just makes me even more disgusted at the feel good stories that muffle out the daily horror of a colonialist occupation for nothing but lies….and oil…
Thank you Hanna….for reminding me I am not alone in my analysis of this shit…
Why bring him home? They could have used him to terrorise prisoners in Abu Ghraib! What a waste of money. Let’s not bother helping out all the orphans this useless “war” has created, they can just rot.
Thanks for restoring my faith in humanity and military personnel. Nice to see articles about normal people.
Whoever said eating dogs is barbaric is quite ignorant. Cultures that eat dogs have been doing so for vast amounts of time, even before domesticated dogs were even around. Just because one culture thinks something is utterly wrong and disgusting, it doesn’t mean it’s “wrong”. Ignorant people are making this world worse and worse.
I wonder how many Iraqi civilians he slaughtered while rescuing the dog. That’s pretty much all those societal dregs do over there.
Aren’t you the brave one ‘anonymous’. You make these outlandish statements about the men serving in our military and you don’t even have the guts to sign your name to a comment on the internet. Go sit in the corner and suck your thumb. Men are fighting to keep you safe.
those fuckers wouldn’t let him keep the dog.
fuck the marines.
Oh American troops! they are so nice! FUCKING ASSHOLES, just google David Motari and you´ll feel proud of your fucking uneducated redneck marines. I think this guy is the only one that deserves my respect
Great Story, too bad there are those responding who forget who allows them the FREEDOM to respond as they do. My deepest thanks to all those who have and are serving in the armed forces. It is men and women like you, that give me the freedom to ignore idiots……….
To the above poster, too bad you forget we had this FREEDOM before we entered the war in Iraq. This FREEDOM was not threatened in any way.
And to “beth”. Go fuck yourself. Your comment was just as anonymous as his was. Oh, but you include a link to (what I assume to be) your political blog. Now it’s REALLY personal!
It’s stories like this that are designed to blind people from the attrocities of war. I’d like to think that people could have the common sense of looking past the fact that a marine has gained a new pet and see that it has fuck all to do with military conflict in Iraq. Touching story, but I’m sure that if an Iraqi soldier found a dog he’d probably fancy looking after it aswell.
Its a fucking dog, dogs are cute, pat yourselves on the back america, you saved a dog.
Ben,
Yea we had the freedom before THIS WAR, but it was these people that keep the freedom going…….you say the freedom was not threatened, were you standing next to me as the WTC was attacked?
Ok, ok, I was reading this story when I was stumbling around and took one look at this article and said ah whatever. But, the comments! You people who think were in a world where we fight for our freedom and that freedom is threatened left and right by terrorists are blind. Freedom has pretty much given Americans a reason to swear at each other. I’m Canadian and I have no reason to give any damn about what goes on with America but I’ll let you people know something. #1 The US invaded iraq on false pretenses and are now currently holding their position in iraq because of it’s oil its become known as the oil war. #2 I hope to God you do not believe that you are fighting iraqi soldiers because your not. 3# US and Britian and Austrialia’s presence in iraq are not slowing terrorism anymore than when they were not occupying iraq. People like Ben and Rory realize that these little stories are meant to blind the public of the war. Im not saying your marines are bad people, they’re probebly great people. But, their motive and orders in iraq are extremely questionable. And on a side note please if you are not computer savy in anyways take it from me you cannot fight someone on the internet and win, your morals will get shot down with the anomony of the internet. Take 4chan for example
P.S I never lose in a internet fight!
God damn it, can you people just read the story and get off the pedestal?
Tridead, you say you never lose an internet fight right after you say its impossible to win an internet fight. That’s just one of your inconsistencies.
Thank your lucky stars you are Canadian. You can afford to be a pacifist because you have the protection of us mean ol’ Americans. They have to come through us to get to you. Your tax dollars can go to all sorts of things, you don’t have to worry about defense. You can run your silly mouths about the infidels to your south because your freedom of speech is guaranteed. What would happen if you had to defend yourselves against an invader or an ideology that is determined to destroy your country and way of life? Could you? Enjoy your freedom and your ability to criticize America for being such a big ol’ meanie.
BTW - I know exactly who we are fighting over there. My son spent 15 months in Baghdad. I know who the enemy is and what is being fought over. If you listened to vets of that war (besides the few that the leftist put up in front of the cameras to further their political agendas) you would know too. This is a real war and its a real threat and you are living in a fantasy if you think otherwise.
lol awe this was what I was waiting for…Lol this is funny. You honestly think we ridicule your forces! And stop speaking in slang you big ol’ meanie. So you have a son over in iraq that would be why you care so much and there’s nothing wrong with that. Though to be honest I supported you I’m suprised your so pissed. Awe this is too fun, oh well there really is no changing American’s mind set your so called glorious army is what’s covering your giant economic collapse. And omg whose gonna invade us what do you mean they have to come through you guys first?! Oh the american way or thinking lol I love how you think we have no military I hope that you know that many of your planes are mimics of the famous avero arrow too bad our goverment hadn’t realized its potential. And listen our forces are fighting in afganistan against terror just as much as you guys are in iraq so get off your american high horse(which is dead) and get back to reality. By the way on the internet I have never won but, I have never lost either! lol something to think about.
OH YEAH! It’s funny that after 2 days of relocating the dog had found them again! lol you guys phail at hiding.
Wow, that’s a big step up from throwing a dog off a cliff. Freaks.
Im all for the american forces keeping dogs in a warzone. i feel safer knowing there is at least something intelligent in the camp.
and beth, canada has nothing to worry about, not because the terrorists have to go through the usa to get to them, but because the terrorists have absolutely no desire or need to attack them, face it the whole world hates you, lol
These people who don’t support our troops disgust me. You should try living in a country without the freedoms we are privileged to have here. I do not support our presence in Iraq, but I support the troops, and give our troops the upmost respect for following their orders to be stationed in a dangerous area.
As far as the individuals throwing the dog off the cliff, and others who do stupid things, they should not cause the tens of thousands of military personnel to be immediately labeled sick bastards, assholes, or whatever else you SCUM decide to call them
Back on subject, This is a awesome story, I hope Nubs will live a happy life in the US, hopefully with his owner very soon.
hehehe I hope you fall of the cliff too!
I’m happy to see I got at least a few supporters on this blog, isnt it so much more intriesting when everyone is angry! lol j/k But seriously you all sound the same freedom this america that seriously I found Adams post so funny(that’s a good thing) its nice to see not everyone is against me.
oh and sorry beth I thought you were ben. In that case I was never supporting you and you suck at proving a point over the internet
That’s such a great story, I’m definitely going to send it to all my email buddies.
After spending 100s billions $ on a war, do you really think that the “News Machine” could not spend 10s thousands $ on this stage show. Such a nice story to hear while approx. 7,000 Iraqs die each month. Well done.
Two or three unrelated things. While we are feeling touched by this story, let’s all go to the local animal shelter and volunteer, or adopt an animal, or investigate how many of these sweet animals are slaughtered each year because some goddamned idiot didn’t get his/her pet spayed or neutered.
Then, people, please know that the marines in Iraq aren’t fighting to keep us free. They are but cogs in the larger wheel of violence we perpetrate on the world, for Hailburton’s profit and oil for ourselves and our gas guzzling vehicles and lifestyles.
I raised two marines myself, and I know they are brave.
Feel good about the dog rescue and then go out and rescue a poor shelter animal yourselves– But think hard about our propensity for making war on innocent people for no reason except greed and ignorance.

awwww how sweet was that.so sweet of brian to do that for nubs.it made me cry
I was the corpsman/ medic of the team…we were all glad that NUBS is doing well now. Nubs can’t even eat the first day we brought him to our base. I was the first one to feed him a POPTARTS. Major called me the dog whisperer coz no one else can’t feed NUBS at one point. I also drain pus from his infected wound and eventaully healed now. It was really a TEAM DOG…but only one can be the master.
I think it’s kind of silly whoever said that if someone wanted to attack Canada, they had to go through “America”. I don’t know about you guys, but I studied geography in school, and there’s this cool thing that the die hard hill billies might not know about, called an ocean. Well yea, they can just cross this ocean and bypass the United States (Because the term “America” encompasses the US, Canada, Central, and South America) and there we go, Canada time.
As for those that think that the Marines or any soldier in Iraq are protecting our freedom, you are sadly mistaken, and I feel sorry for you, to be so blinded by our media as to think this is true. Check out any other country’s news stations, and you’ll get more truth than anything we hear here. What the Marines are doing there is protecting our Oil investments.
Great, you saved a dog, but I agree with the other posters, what about the women and children that are slaughtered in the cross fire of this war?
Please educate yourselves before posting, thanks.
A boy walks on a beach where thousands of starfish are stranded and begins throwing them back in the ocean. A man comes along and asks the boy why he’s making the futile effort. “What difference does it make?” he asks. The boy throws another starfish in the water and says, “it makes a difference to that one.” Am I wrong to believe that sometimes we save the world one heartbeat at a time?
Mitch - great point and well said. I think you are absolutely right. I think that’s the only way we save the world.
