Kristie Brown was raped by Marcus Dixon while they attended high school together. He spent some time in jail, but became a cause celeb and now has NFL dreams while Kristie was run out of town and accused of racism and ruining Marcus’ life.

In the interest of full disclosure, I will state up front that I have personal knowledge of this case and know some of the people peripherally involved. I also know the community very well. Lindale, Georgia is a community that suffered economically as a result of NAFTA. The cotton mill in town shut down leaving the community without an economic base and turning it into a bedroom community for surrounding areas. To some extent, the people there have used an exceptional football team as a central element that maintains a sense of community.
That being said, the entire case is outrageous and angers me at a very deep level. I know that I’m a cynical person and I have known that the news media slants things in whatever way they choose to slant it. This case was the first time I saw the slanting up close knowing that the way the case was being presented on the national news was just flat out not true.
I am compelled to write about this today because I saw an article that reports that Marcus Dixon is finishing up his college education and is hoping to get picked in the NFL Draft on Saturday.
I will pass on repeating everything that’s been written about Marcus Dixon and the incident that resulted in his being put in prison on a ten year sentence. He only served part of that sentence. His supporters claim that his accuser had claimed she was raped because she was afraid of her racist father when in fact it was consensual sex. She HAD claimed she was afraid to tell her father, but never claimed it was anything other than rape.
The facts that supported her claim of rape that are rarely, if ever, reported in the news are the fact that she was hospitalized following the attack on her at school because she was so badly beaten and torn as a result of the attack. From that perspective it didn’t have the appearance of a consensual act.
Another factor that supported the rape charge was that Marcus Dixon was known to have had incidents of sexual misconduct in the past. He was never charged and the incidents were kept out of the news because Marcus was a star football player. Do you think that sounds ridiculous? It does unless you know the mentality at that school. Football is everything there and a star player is well protected by his teachers, coaches and the administration of the school.
Two alleged incidents got him suspended from school for a total of 10 days. In March of his sophomore year, Dixon exposed himself in a classroom, and a year later he allegedly touched a 14-year-old girl inappropriately after track practice. Neither situation was reported to the Floyd County police despite his suspension.
The previous incidents weren’t reported because of the protection of his mentors. All of those people, as well as the adoptive parents of Marcus, jumped to his defense as soon as his behavior went too far for them to keep it under wraps. He had to face trial.
The first thing his defenders did was declare that it was an issue of race. Kristie Brown is white and Marcus is black. Kristie Brown’s father had made some racial statements. Even more incriminating, it happened in Georiga. It was a piece of cake to paint the entire incident as racially motivated and an attempt to keep a black boy from doing well by a bunch of white racists in a Southern town. After all, you know how we keep our black people down (that’s sarcastic - so don’t get all huffy on me!).
Bryant Gumbel came down and took Marcus’ part. He stood in front of an old raggedy barn with a huge Confederate flag painted on the side of the barn to do his report. I have been in that area a lot and have NEVER seen that barn. I have no idea how or where he managed to find a barn painted as a Confederate flag, but the visual point he was making was right there. This is the South and WE KNOW HOW THOSE RACIST SOUTHERNERS ARE!!! They will do anything to keep this gifted black boy from making it big.
The problem with that point is that there are a lot of gifted black people in the South who do quite well for themselves - so why did the entire State of Georgia line up to stand in the way of this particular black kid? Hmmm …. Its a mystery. But apparently we all stood in line to stand in the way of Marcus Dixon making it in football and getting to go to Vanderbilt University. It was a vast White Southern Conspiracy against Marcus Dixon. Meanwhile, please take a look-see at how many people at Vanderbilt or any other university are black and southern before you tell me that Southerners go out of their way to keep black people from being able to go to college. The accusation against the community was ludicrous and insulting. No one has every apologized for making such reckless accusations against the community.

Oprah Winfrey and Marcus Dixon (Photo)
Oprah Winfrey took up the cause of Marcus Dixon. The claim was that his ‘real crime’ was being black and having sex. That plays well with the rest of the country that thinks the South is full of characters straight out of Deliverance. The rest of the country eats that stuff up … and worse, they believe it. Oprah told Kristie Brown that Marcus had told her he forgave her.
Oprah: He says he forgives you.
Kristie: Forgives me? How could he forgive me if I didn’t do anything?
Oprah: What would you want to say to him if he were sitting here right now?
Kristie: I would want to know why he would even want to think about raping anybody.
At the height of the publicity of this incident there were rumors in town that Jesse Jackson was coming to town to stage a rally and march to protest the conviction of Marcus Dixon. His basic assumption appeared to be that the whites in the town were racist and keeping the blacks down and the blacks in the town were just too kept down to stand up for themselves. The black community insisted that Jesse Jackson stay out of town. They made it clear they didn’t want him here. One thing I heard frequently was that people were insulted that people seemed to think that Southern blacks were so ignorant and weak they couldn’t speak for themselves.
Did it ever occur to anyone to question whether or not MARCUS was lying? Did it ever occur to anyone that this girl who was badly beaten might be telling the truth? Apparently not. Her family ended up having to leave town because of threats against them. All the while, Marcus’ defenders claimed he was the one being threatened. Oddly, even with him being ’scared for his life’, when he was released from prison and returned to town he was given a big party. He went on to college on a football scholarship and now may get the opportunity to go on to play for the National Football League.
Please, tell me … who suffered from this incident? Who was the victim and who was the perpetrator? Who has gain notoriety and money from it? Who had to leave town due to threats on their lives? Who has been consistent in their story and who has had a history of writing off bad sexual behavior to the ever popular, ‘boys will be boys’.
There is a reason that the people in town were not as outraged about this as people from other parts of the country. Its a close community and people know the people involved. People here knew that the justice system had worked and that it wasn’t about race.
This entire case is NOT about race. Its about football. Pepperell High School in Lindale, Georgia is all about football. The football players there can and do get away with bad behavior. The students who are NOT involved in football there, in one way or the other, do not have the privilege of students who are involved in the sport. I’ve seen it up close and personal and I know it to be true. When a football player there is injured and is of no use to them anymore he is thrown into the heap with the other students who are not of value.
On the other hand, a football player that has the ability to play the game on a level that might draw the attention of universities and even someday the NFL is immune from consequences regardless of his behavior.
I once had a football coach at Pepperell High School tell me not to worry about my son’s grades or studying. I was told he’d get all A’s …. regardless. After all, he was breaking records for the school at the time and they had big plans for him. I protested and said I had big plans for him too. I wanted him to build his mind as well as his body. The coach looked at me as though he was confused. He said, ‘He’s breaking records, he doesn’t need to study. Don’t worry. We’ll make sure he makes A’s. We’ll take care of him.’
I suspect they took care of Marcus Dixon too.
Marcus Dixon (Video)

You are a complete idiot if you are claiming Marcus Dixon didnt suffer from any of this, and your remark about the school fixing his grades is completely ridiculous. Your just an idiot
Billy,
I do believe that Marcus Dixon has suffered. He’s suffered because no one ever thought enough of him to expect him to do anything more than play football. No one ever held him in high enough esteem to expect him to behave as we expect others to behave. No one ever made him suffer the consequences of his behavior so that he could learn socially appropriate behavior the same way the rest of us do.
The way in which the MEDIA chooses to present a case somehow becomes the “true story” regardless of the true story. In this case they chose, in spite of proven facts in the case, to placate national black leaders to the detriment of justice. The power of the media is frightening - and likely will be the downfall of our nation.
I know, Joan! Its really frightening. A story like this can get so twisted that it doesn’t matter who says what, people will believe what they want to believe.
Its also very sad to me that there doesn’t seem to be any expectations of character and good behavior any more. If you can make money for someone else, then anything goes. That seems to apply to athletes, actors, singers … whoever can make money for the people who are making money off of them.
Oh - and if you dare point that out you are called an ‘idiot’ by ppl like ‘billy’. lol
I am very familiar with this community and it is a proven fact that they will fix athletes grades so that they will graduate. It is a town full of ignorant people. I’m sure that he did rape that poor girl but everyone wants to play that race card so now a rapist walks free.
Beth:
Think about this story for a minute. Dixon was a black teenager having consensual sex with a white teenage girl who was a virgin at the time. When this happens, there will be bruising and tearing in some cases. I’m a firm believer in karma. He did his time as a another attorney represented him pro bono and the truth was revealed through the court of law. Yes the school had not reported some incidents, but that doesn’t give a money hungry family with a lying daughter the right to ask 5 million from the school or ruin a kid’s life. If he had gotten out of jail and became a janitor somewhere, you would’ve left this alone. The fact is, he did his time, started over and worked hard to have this opportunity. He will be in the NFL and Brown will be bagging his rich parent’s groceries because she banked on a lie and got jack $#!@.
A very entertaining story, Beth. One thing you can count on in this world is an opposing view. I don’t believe your stories of the girl being beaten, somehow I think the prosecuting lawyers might have mentioned it in their case against Dixon. The other funny part about your story is that you accuse the school to pass these football players on without them having to learn anything. How, then, do you explain Dixon’s impending graduation from college? I guess you’ll claim they are passing him along as well, right? Anyway, I enjoyed your story because as I said, the ignorance of people never ceases to amaze me. I wish Dixon the best as he sounds like a kid who made some mistakes as a teenager (as we all do), but has learned from them and is working hard to make something of his life. I feel sorry for Smith for having to live with this lie.
I agree with Rick, why wasnt the supposed beating mentioned more. Who’s to say the father didnt do the beating when he found out she had sex with a black man. This case sounds like the typical white southern town justice. And I am from the south, I know how they think.
This child was brutally raped. Skin color is not the point…it’s an outrage that Dixon can use racism against this little girl..and at 15, she was still a little girl. The S.O.B. will rape again. I’d put good money on it.
IF Kristie Brown was “run out of town” why did I see her bagging groceries at Millican’s the other day? Whether he did it or not we may never know this side of eternity, but Kudos to Marcus for trying to move on and prove that he can make something of himself.
Beth is RIGHT on. Let’s hear it for the lawless NFL - National Felony League! And the Dallas Cowboys want to sign PACMAN ‘GANGSTA’ JONES? I’m in LE so we love the NFL felons Beth. They give us … job security all the way. Love when the players SNORT the 50-yard line in warm ups too. Love when they TRY to speak ENGLISH in the interviews as well…. Must be that College ‘EDGE YOU KAY SHUN’?
It was brought up in the trial Rick - it wasn’t reported in the media. Why do you think he was convicted?
Brandon - you are right about one thing - the karma. He may be in the NFL - but he will do it again. Just watch for his name in the paper connected with another crime. As long as he continues to get away with it he will continue to do it.
Whose life was ruined? You assume she ruined his for daring to turn him in rather than keep the incident quiet. Please. She was RAPED. Just because he can play football doesn’t mean he isn’t responsible for his behavior.
I agree Jo - he’ll be in trouble again. He’s been CAUGHT exposing himself at least twice before this rape. Who knows how many times he didn’t get caught. Its a pattern of behavior and he’s continued to get away with it. Nothing has been learned.
A good high school friend of mine was date raped by an NHL player and they covered a lot of it up and the rapist played the “she turned me on … blue balls … victim card!” RAPE IS RAPE and sports stars and Hollyweirdos get all the breaks. This is a sham and a disgrace. No HATE CRIME here, nor HATE RAPE, eh?
Beth, I have to that your lack of knowledge on these people and your willingness to report on them contradicts yourself. I went to high school with both Dixon and Brown, and I have to start off with saying that Kristie although she is said to be a virgin at the time, was nothing short of a boy crazy teenager, she was a loser in high school, who tried to sleep her way into the ‘in crowd.’ She made a mistake and couldn’t face it so she made someone else pay for her mistake. I believe in Karma, and Dixon is finally getting what he deserves a college education, NFL career, and the chance to move on with his life. Brown is also getting what she deserves a job bagging groceries that pays minimum wage. She has always been a nobody and will always be a nobody.
Beth,
I’m addressing you not as someone who is well aware of media manipulation, so don’t think I’m a blind observer to all of this - but I must question some of your talking points. I grew up in an upper class, silicon valley town, attended college in Ann Arbor and graduate school in Atlanta where I have often ventured outside the city to experience the culture of the state. I can confidently say that to deny vast, extreme and vicious racism in the south is to be truly blind (or dishonest). I’ve wseen racism in all these sectors, but nowhere compared to the unadulterated bigotry I witnessed in GA. I’ve seen many confederate flags hung from cars. I’ve overheard conversations in which people have been disgusted by the fact that their food was being prepared by a black person. Georgia hardly has the “live and let live” mentality that I believe is so important to so many ways of life. You claim that the media has chosen the facts that they feel are worthy of representation, yet if you walked into a courtroom on behalf of this young woman, you’d be laughed out of court for wasting everyone’s time. A few points if I may.
1. I’ve yet to see evidence that this woman was badly beaten. Tearing of the vagina is hardly uncommon when a girl loses her virginity.
2. You haven’t shown me anything I can work with. All I hear is “well this and this happened to me so he’s guilty”. I hate to break it to you, but this town is not special. I can guarantee you racism does exist there as it exists everywhere!
3. My father happens to be a HIGHLY successful and respected attorney in San Francisco and he presented an interesting point: No attorney is his right mind would agree to represent someone, free of charge, without knowing ALL the facts. If David Balser had suspected that the Marcus Dixon was guilty he would not have agreed to represent him pro bono.
4. You put the media on trial as though they are responsible for what’s presented in court. Any evidence that you claim exists would have been known. And guess what? He was STILL found not guilty on the count of rape. And no, statutory rape is not the same thing.
The facts are clear. Nobody is grinding the black axe with anything that doesn’t exist. Racism is a problem in the south.
And seriously, you’re going to call him a sexual deviant because he exposed himself while in high school? Show me a 16 or 17 year old boy who hasn’t exposed himself in public and I’ll show you a liar.

p.s. I like how you decided to finish your post with a video of Marcus Dixon making a fool of himself. Clearly not in an attempt to distort his person.

Don’t mind the multiple posts. Computer is acting up
Thank you, Danny. Beth, people like you make me sad. Let’s go with facts from now on, and not blatant attempts to paint an ugly picture.
Kristie brown got rewarded with some Mandingo Dick. therefore she is not a victim. white girls love big black dicks
I wish to say that if this girl was raped, which I don’t think she was, she would have proved it in court. Evedentally it was not proved, therefore the young man as served his time. Her dad was probably a racists and wanted to ruin this your man, along with his daughter. I guess that they have to realize that “What God has for YOU, it is for YOU”, they did not break him and someday, he will find a good young lady to settle down with. I am sure that he has learned from his mistakes.. The young lady may be rethinking this situation and I hope that one day she will come out with the TRUTH!
Beth — I’m curious to see your response to Danny’s message, especially his comment that a jury of 9 white people and 3 black people found him not guilty of rape, but found him guilty of having consensual sex with a 15 year old.
I am very new to this case and only read the ESPN and Oprah articles before coming here in an attempt to not hear the full story, i.e. facts that ESPN and Oprah omitted (yes Danny, the meida does spin the facts frequently to make the story more palatable).
I am a white American, born in Georgia, but raised in various parts of the world. I can attest to racism in the south because I have relatives who are still racist (not only old people, but teens and young adults too). But to fair there are varying types of racism and other forms of discrimination in other parts of the world.
Sorry for the length of this post, but I truly am curious to learn the facts.
Beth, you’re an ignorant southerner and just reinforced my opinion of rednecks.
Comment deleted because commenter is a disgusting pig.
i wish the young lady involved the best of luck i feel this all came about because of a outrage father and a scared teenager of her father. i donot feel this girl would have made this up if she wasn’t afraid of her faher that’s the villian not MARCUS DIXON. I’m so proud of this kid he shows you that no matter what type of mistakes you make in your life as a kid you can redeem yourself. i wouldn’t say learn from his mistake with this situation because he had sex (which kids should wait for)with this young girl and lost 15 months of his life what a waste. may god continue to bless him and his family white or black. my prayer is that he makes no mistakes because it will only make the accuser happy but we all make mistake….NFL GOOD CHOICE HAMPTON UNIVERSITY GOOD DECISION.
I swear it amazes me how people are so quick to rush to judgement about Marcus….when I was in high school boys exposed themselves in class, I’ve had guys grab my butt walking down the hall, there were kids having sex at school all the time…..what does that say, Immaturirty. It doesn’t scream rapists. Guys take a while longer to develop mentally than females, guys thought it was cool to whip it out in the middle of class, but that didn’t make them rapists, just really immature. It has been stated and clear that Ms. Brown was lying in her statments…how can you rape another person by taking their clothes off using your knees while holding down their shoulders, that’s why the majority white jury found Marcus, not guilty of rape… It’s a shame that Marcus has moved on and made somthing out of himself and people like you still tear him down, he’s made it to the NFL and Kristie is still bagging it at the local grocery store, what goes around comes back around 10 fold. God is blessing Marcus and no one can bring that down. GET OVER IT and get a life
I was born n raised n rome. I think that sadly ppl r n denial about racism. Not only n rome but all over the country. It is heartbreaking that this case wnt as far as it did n that so many ppl were hurt n the process. But I am thankful that Marcus was able to rise above all the negativity and prove that he is and can be more than wht he was portrayed to be.
As a Law and Justice student, I was trying hard to look past the potential race card and focus more on what happened in the courtroom. Majority of the jurors did not find Marcus guilty of forcible rape. They did not feel there was enough evidence to support that. The prosecution also brought a charge against Marcus of aggravated child molestation which can be used when a child faces an injury as a result of a sex crime. They were using the angle that the loss of Brown’s virginity was an injury. Many jurors felt that this charge carried the weight of a misdemeanor charge, not a felony. The time Marcus spent in jail was not for a rape charge, it was for a charge that was mis-used in this case and therefor I feel that he spent enough time in jail. The situation sucks for both parties involved and only each of them individually know the truth and have to live with that for the rest of their lives.
as I recall from the story, Marcus scored very High on his SATs..if grades were being fixed for him, you would expect that his SAT scores would be low..but they were not. Marcus got a Scholarship to Vanderbilt..which is not a football powerhouse..but a fine Academic institution..and that was his first choice..He had offers from Georgia, Tennessee etc..but he chose Vanderbilt..the offer was rescinded..and he made the Deans list at Hampton, where he graduated with honors. I know it’s hard for rednecks to comprehend, but intelligence knows no color. This is an intelligent kid..and should he not make it in the NFL..he will succeed at anything he chooses to do, he has the smarts. When I was in HS, I knew many 18yr old seniors that had sex with 15 yr old freshmen/Sophomores..for the girls, it was status “I slept with a senior”, just like it was status for Junior and Senior girls to date College guys…Best of Luck Marcus!!! You deserve success!!!
I cannot believe that people believe that Dixon raped this girl. She had consensual sex with this guy, and her dad pressured her into these bogus charges. God is good, and He watches over the innocent.
I’ve been following this story/case for a while and I am happy to hear that Marcus was signed by the Dallas Cowboys. Marcus was a high profile jock in a backwater town and this girl saw having sex with him as a status boost. But when her dad found out, she played the rape card to cover her own behind. Well, look who is paying for that lie now. I wish Marcus the best in the life he has worked hard and earned, and wish everyone would just see a very young and immature teenager who made and paid for a mistake (having sex with a white girl in a racist town) for what it is and let him live his life.
Oh it’s more than that…there was probably a level of attempted entrapment there…he knocks her up..and when he gets that big NFL contract, she is on easy street with those big child support payments..of course Marcus (hopefully) used protection!! Now she is bagging gorceries and Marcus a college graduate with honors has a chance to be a member of one of the highest profile organizations in the country..and has a chance at fame and wealth..meanwhile she’ll be barefott and pregnant like a good ole’ southern gal!!
I know this story all too well. I know that Marcus has suffered a great deal and so has his family. Marcus has sex with a girl who knew when her father found out he would be upset with her and not want to deal with her in anyway. I am sure they has sex however it was not rape. As a person who has delt with being a raped I was very offended that she would put that out int he world that this young man had harmed her. The only harm that was done was that her father found out and she had to lie to stay on his good side. The school settled and gave her family money. After being raped the last thing I wanted was money from anyone I wanted that person in jail and to never see the light of day. Marcus was found not guilty of rape his only guilt was having sex with a girl with a redneck for a Daddy.
My computer is not acting right so I am not sure if my post went up or not but in the other post I stated that I have been raped and the last thing I wanted was a cash settlement. Marcus did not rape this girl and she knows it. She was having a good time trying to get the star football player and when her daddy found out she had sex with him she told a lie and after that one lie she has had to keep the lies going. Now her family and friends want to be upset because Marcus went to school and is now going PRO what you mad about oh wait is it cause she will never get any of that money? You all need to get a life and leave this young man alone. Get a clue and grow up he has. He has also moved on.

first of all, i fully agree that the fact that race plays such a huge role in our opinions and perceptions of one another indicates that we haven’t evolved as a country as much as most of us would claim or like to think… but i guess the question that i would like to pose is what if she were black?…would so many of you be as quick to continue to condemn him and label him as a “rapist” and call her a “poor little girl”?…the jury in his first trial felt that he wasn’t guilty of rape and had no idea that there was a 10 year mandatory sentence in place for his lesser charges…then a supreme court overturned his case because it was unjust… some people are acting as if this sort of thing happens all the time!…well it doesn’t..there are countless men in jail right now for crimes they didn’t commit…there are also countless men and women who have been hung, shot, stabbed, rapped and brutalized in every other possible way for doing nothing more than attempt to live their lives and raise their families…their crime, they were black in america…do the masses of you run to their defense as you have to this “poor little girl’s?”…i think not…the truth is, 99.9% of us will never know what happened between those two people…i myself am of the opinion that he idn’t rape her, but the question we should all ask ourselves is would we still be as adamant in our opinions if she were black and he were white?…and if we were being honest with ourselves, sadly, most of us wouldn’t be proud of our answers…so what does this say about us?… are we capable of becoming an unbiased society, that loves thy neighbor, regardless of his color or creed?…i hope for the sake of my daughter and unborn children that we are but in my heart of hearts, i seriously doubt it.
To answer your question, no we will never be. We have become a society of who has been ‘wronged’ the most. And If you are ‘wrong’ well then it MUST be your race, gender, orientation etc…but of course a double standard exists: If you are a white male you can be insulted, criticized, ridiculed, accused, humiliated..but If you are gay, a woman, black..FORGET IT!!! YOu are not allowed to say anything wrong..because as we all know White males are the reincarnation of Satan, and Women, Gays, Blacks are all saints who do NOTHING WRONG…Speaking as a non-caucasian..I see more racism towards Whites from the African American community than vice-versa..in the form of preferential treatment, and just plain insults..oh but White Males are the bigots!! People like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton thrive on this divide..they profit from it, much like Yassar Arafat profitted from Palestinian/Israeli violence and hatred…I was in a theater once with hundreds of people..and there was a group of kids who were noisy, disruptive and inappropriate..they were black..and they were asked to be quiet or please leave..when they refused..they were escorted out..screaming racism the whole time..as long as this type of nonsense occurs..the African American Community will never be taken seriously in the eyes of White America, nor should they be, if this type of thing keeps occuring…pathetic
OH and that’s just the tip of the iceberg..let’s not forget “You People”..which is the grammatically correct way to address a group of people..regardless of race etc..but now it seems the English Language is racist against Blacks..more reason not to tkae the community seriously..until this nonsense stops nothing changes…
just happened to stumble on this website while trying to see if Marcus made it through the first round of cuts, but Being from the Lindale area I met the young man several times prior to the incident, he seemed to be a very decent guy. The previous conduct incidents referred to are typical with a lot of white boys in my class at Pepperell. The idea that teachers and staff protect athletes is not true. Other students were shown the same respet as athletes in my eperience and often accusations of athlete protections comes from a student or parent’s insecurities about grades or social success. I do know that many people locally judged the case to be racially motivated based on interviews from the lead investigator, but that seemed to come from the perception he lacked intelligence, that seems to happen when someone continues to repeat in interviews a high school senior having sex with a high school freshman is a major indicator of a pedophile. He also claimed Marcus would continue to fit the profile of a pedophile through out his life. since then marcus has graduated with a GPA above 3.5 and has no incidents of sexual misconduct. ESPN also reported the girl continues to live a Lindale working at a local grocery store, which despite my belief he was inocent, I believe was unfaire because there is only one grocery store in that town.
As an educator in a southern state, I have witnessed atheletes receiving preferential treatment in classrooms. HOWEVER, your commentary (based upon one’s opinion without citing credible and verifiable sources with the necessary reference notes for fact checking) is full of accusations. If, in fact this Southern Belle was raped and subsequently admitted into the hospital, where is the proof? You provided a video (that obviously does not directly relate to this story) of Marcus having fun but you lack proof of a hospital admittance or photographs taken by investigative authorities showing any evidence of a “beating”. Where are the references to credible and well-known media outlets to back your allegations that he has a history of this type of behavior. Reporters are well versed at locating sources that the average person cannot. Surely at least one reporter has uncovered someone to say these things happened. This type of proof would at least place a sense of “perhaps it happened” in the mind of society.
Both of these people have been affected by the events of that one night. However, moving on in life with a forgiving spirit and a God-given purpose is what they both should focus upon.
Instead of your attempts to bash Marcus, why not celebrate the accomplishments of this young woman as a survivor of at the very minimum media scrutiny and ridicule. Survivors of rape find it important to be able to move on and declare themselves no longer victims by telling their stories of survival and triumph. Maybe YOU can champion Kristie’s life by helping and guiding her to move from victim to advocate. Life is full of injustices. Either we choose to be eternal victims or we choose to be victors. Life is too short to continue to look backwards but should be celebrated and lived moving forward. Apparently, MARCUS DIXON has done so by overcoming obstacles whether they were self-inflicted or society-inflicted.
GOD BLESS MARCUS AND KRISTIE
Beth,
I also have personal knowledge of this case and I’m so thankful that you are keeping the facts out there. It’s so sad that Kristie has been turned into the violent one. It’s amazing to me that so many people have made negative comments toward you when they have no first hand knowledge of the case. I know in my heart that it will all come out int he wash. I just hope he doesn’t go on to rape anyone else and even worse several others.
Also, in reference to “A Southern Teacher” the reason why the school was found to be negligent was due to the proof that they had not reported his previous behavior to law enforcement as protocol. In order to not release names because people have been threatened with their jobs if they speak of the matter, I’ll just say there was a lot of proof. Court records are a part of public record and can be requested. They would be found in the trial against the school system, not the trial about the rape. The girls medical records are private as are all medical records.
I’m not trying to be snappy with you I just know the case very, very well.
Thanks Angela,
I have actually gotten to where I rarely read the comments to this post because they have been so hostile. I appreciate your input and your willingness to speak out.
I can understand you not wishing to be subjected to the archaic ignorance of so many. It’s funny that people can’t just admit they really don’t know what happened. I see a lot of comments that seem to be right out of the “good ole boy” network. It’s hard for me to watch Oprah anymore. I think deep down she is a great person who contributes greatly to the community. However, after she was so quick to jump on this case and believe it was all based on race, I no longer believe that her show represents an unbiased point of view. You would think based on her own experience of sexual abuse she would have at least just kept her distance from this case since she obviously couldn’t have known for sure all the details involved.
I also know of three white men from the same community who served 10 years each for statutory rape and yet Marcus did not serve his 10 years. Even if people want to believe it was just a statutory issue, he still was found quilty of that. People with little knowledge of the court system don’t realize that a lot of things are dropped to lesser charges as part of a plea deal. The jury can only find a person guilty for something they are being charged for. They can’t say, well I know he is being charged for this but let’s just change it to something else. If they thought he was innocent they would have just found him not guilty.
And for the guy who said that all 16-17 year old males have exposed themselves in public, he may need some therapy because my background and degree in Psychology stress that public exposure is definitely an indicator of sexual deviant behavior. It just isn’t normal male behavior. Maybe in the animal kingdom or on National Geographic but not in “civilized society.”
Best wishes to you Beth. I know that you, like so many people involved in this are fighting the good fight. I don’t know if we ever met while I was in Rome but I was a volunteer with the Sexual Assault Center.
Why don’t we talk about the fact that a teacher from this same high school was convicted of statutory rape for having sex with her daughter’s 14yr old boyfriend and (to my knowledge) never spent a day in prison. This woman was in her 30’s and had sex with a 14yr old child and was not sentenced to 10yrs in prison. She was also providing alcohol to minors at parties in her house.
