Eight Belles Went Down in the Kentucy Derby

Eight Belles
Eight Belles ran with the big boys today and she did herself and all around her proud. She was the only filly to run the Kentucky Derby since 1999. Only three fillies have ever won the Derby, the last being Winning Colors in 1988.
Today’s race was reminiscent of the race run by Ruffian and Foolish Pleasure. In that race the filly gave it all she had as Eight Belles did today. Eight Belles came in second to Big Brown, who was favored to win. She ran her heart out … literally.
As Eight Belles crossed the finish line in a phenomenal second place, her heart gave out. She slumped to the ground. Her jockey slid off her. Both of her front ankles were broken. The on-site veterinarian was called in and she had to be euthanised on the track immediately after the race.
She was a grand and beautiful horse who literally went down in a blaze of glory.

My late husband and I were there in the clubhouse in 88…he so loved the horses, and taught me so much. He passed 3 weeks later. Now I watch all the races on TV, and pick “my four”. Never pick one to win, just place and show. Today, I picked 8 Belles…I mean 20 years is an omen, right??? I have not quit crying, and I don’t understand why this is affecting me so much.I’m glad you put something up…I’m too emo to attempt it.

Oh Jo! I am so sorry to hear that. Its no wonder you are feeling emotional watching the Derby. You have a very emotional tie to it. Especially with the circumstances of this years race.

Frau Vader rode horses in Der Fatherland… Is there something about over-breeding, where the bones aren’t formed as strongly as they should be? Eight Belles ran the race of her life and isn’t suffering now. The HELL with Peta and their ilk… If Hitlery Rotten Clinton shows up in Baltimore next week for another photo op with that lampshade she was wearing, the jockeys and colts will bolt!
