The whole mess surrounding South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford and his Argentine mistress, Maria Belen Chapur, has focused primarily on Sanford and his embarrassing press conference upon his return from Argentina. There was a lot of speculation about who the mysterious ‘Maria’ was in his equally embarrassing love emails that were released to the press for voyeurism of the world. We all knew it was only a matter of time before enterprising journalist would find out who she is, get her picture out on the internet and dig up videos that feature her. Needless to say, it didn’t take much time.

As a result of the entire mess, Ms. Chapur, a 41-year-old television reporter, has issued a statement and says that will be that from her.

Maria Belen Chapur’s released statement was read on Sunday on Argentine television station CN5. Here is the text of the statement:

Some experts believe that newly uncovered image, deep in the catacombs of Rome, Italy, are the oldest St. Paul image found to date.

The image that is alleged to be the Christian apostle Paul, is that of a man with sharp features, large dark eyes, a receding hairline and a long pointed beard set in a red circle which is set in a yellow circle. The fresco dates back to the 4th century and was discovered during restoration work at the Catacomb of St. Thekla. The catacomb is a Christian burial place close to the Basilica of St. Paul out of the walls in Rome. St. Thekla was said to have been a Roman follower of Paul who was put to death by the Emperor Diocletian. It has been said that her tomb had been built over the location where St. Paul was buried.

Barbara Mazzei, the director of the work at the Catacomb, said:

“We had been working in the Catacomb for some time and it is full of frescoes.

“However the pictures are all covered with limestone which was covering up much of the artwork and so to remove it and clean it up we had to use fine lasers.

“The result was exceptional because from underneath all the dirt and grime we saw for the first time in 1600 years the face of Saint Paul in a very good condition.

“It was easy to see that it was Saint Paul because the style matched the iconography that we know existed at around the 4th Century – that is the thin face and the dark beard.

“It is a sensational discovery and is of tremendous significance. This is then first time that a single image of Saint Paul in such good condition has been found and it is the oldest one known of.

“Traditionally in Christian images of St Paul he is always alongside St Peter but in this icon he was on his own and what is also significant is the fact that St Paul’s Basilica is just a few minutes walk away.

“It is my opinion that the fresco we have discovered was based on the fact that St Paul’s Basilica was close by, there was a shrine to him there at that site since the 3rd Century.

“This fresco is from the early part of the 4th Century while before the earliest were from the later part and examples have been found in the Catacombs of Domitilla.”

The Earth has continued to rotate in the universe, even though the American media gives the impression that it might have stopped due to the not at all surprising death of an aging, sickly American pop star. While the death of Michael Jackson knocked pretty much everything else off the news, it didn’t stop the actual events that make the news. Case in point, the Iranian protests continue, even though they have lost steam due to the short attention span of the American public. They need the only support they had to maintain their momentum.

During the lull of attention, the Islamic Republic of Iran has perpetrated a flurry of enormous violence against protesters on the streets and those who have tried to escape the brutal, merciless retaliation of the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the Iranian President Ahmadinejad. Apparently, anyone who has questioned the highly questionable results of the recent Iranian election are now considered an enemy of the state and are being subjected to the Iran crackdown.

Actors, writers, professors and artists of every kind are being rounded up and are disappearing. The Iranian militia, the Basiji, are raiding houses, beating civilians, destroying their cars and creating an overall atmosphere of terror for anyone who is not considered a ‘good Iranian’ by the Islamic Republic. The Basiji are using axes, knives and even shooting into the crowds from helicopters to break up any gatherings of protesters.

Michael Jackson

News broke this afternoon that legendary singer Michael Jackson was rushed to the hospital from his Holmby Hills, California home at about 12.12 p.m. Pacific Time. As crowds started gathering outside of the hospital, news started leaking out that he was in a coma and then that he was dead. About 3 p.m. Pacific Time it was finally officially confirmed that Michael Jackson had died on June 25, 2009.

Michael Jackson was married twice. His first marriage was to Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of the legendary King of Rock n Roll, Elvis Presley. It was rumored that the marriage was one of convenience to give Jackson the appearance of a family life. The marriage was short lived and the two divorced just 16 months after their marriage. Jackson then married his dermatologist’s assistant, Debbie Rowe. Jackson and Rowe were married from 1996 until 1999. They had two children, Prince Michael Jackson, Jr. and Paris Michael Katherine. Michael had another child, Prince ‘Blanket’ Michael Jackson, II.

Michael Jackson is survived by his three children: Michael Joseph Jackson, Jr., Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince ‘Blanket’ Michael Jackson II.

Michael Jackson was a child star as the lead singer of the popular family singing group, the Jackson 5. As he grew older, he went out on his own and achieved legendary status and an international superstar with hits like, Beat it, Thriller, Man in the Mirror and Billie Jean. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, won 13 Grammy Awards and sold more than 750 million singles and albums worldwide. He was reported to have been planning a comeback by touring England this summer. However, he had just recently announced that he would delay that tour until next summer. The reason given for delaying the This Is It concert tour was that he needed to work on perfecting the performance. In fact, he was rehearsing the show just last night, and its reported that he didn’t show any signs of distress during the rehearsal.

In recent years, Jackson’s music career took a backseat to the limelight he received for his increasingly bizarre behavior. There has been a circus-like atmosphere around most of his appearances as there is outside of the hospital where he was pronounced dead this afternoon.

There are currently rumors that there will be an investigation into the cause of his death, although that hasn’t been confirmed. The story is still unfolding. What we do know is that Michael Jackson died suddenly this afternoon at 50 years of age. Below is a the Jackson 5 Ed Sullivan Show video from their appearance on that show in 1970. This was the beginning of Jackson’s phenomenal career.

South Carolina First Lady Jenny Sanford has made official remarks on her husband, Mark Sanford’s, affair. The Jenny Sanford statement has been published and you can read the full text as well as photos below.

Jenny Sanford

The whole Governor Mark Sanford affair is very disappointing and downright embarrassing to watch. I had read about his wife, South Carolina First Lady Jenny Sanford in the past. My impression of her has been that she’s a tough, classy lady who has been a real asset to the state of South Carolina. Following the revelations of her husband’s affair, that impression has been strengthened. She has conducted herself with dignity, class and grace, in spite of the circus of publicity surrounding her, her husband and family right now. I find it admirable that she didn’t stand next to her husband during his embarrassing press conference today. I also found it admirable that when the press and his political enemies started reporting that he was ‘missing’, she didn’t try to cover for him or lie for him. Instead, she gave as little information as possible and allowed things to follow their natural course. Again, she maintained her dignity.

Through it all, she has appeared to put the best interests of their four sons, Marshall, Landon, Bolton and Blake, first and foremost.

John Kerry tried to make a joke again. This John Kerry joke referenced the story about South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford going missing. Kerry said it was too bad Sarah Palin didn’t go missing. Read about it below and see photos and a video.

John Kerry, Sarah Palin

We haven’t heard a lot from John Kerry since he was the democrat’s presidential candidate in 2004. But he rears his head occasionally when someone wants to interview him about something or he has a speech at some obscure college somewhere. Well, he’s was speaking to some business and civic leaders yesterday when he tried to make a joke about Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin in reference to the then ‘missing’ South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford.

He told the group:

Too bad if a governor had to go missing it couldn’t have been the governor of Alaska. You know, Sarah Palin.

Of course, the group that had been invited by Kerry laughed at his lame joke.

Too bad this John Kerry joke isn’t his only joke. He has a history of making lame jokes.

The more the democrats attack Sarah Palin, the more obvious it is that she’s a real threat to them. They really are afraid of her and what she represents.

Band Of Brothers
Band Of Brothers
U.S. Army

Something a little different this week. Instead of profiling a service member, Wednesday Hero will be profiling a movie. Band Of Brothers. It was a miniseries tha aired on HBO in 2001. It follows Maj. Richard Winters, Cpt. Lewis Nixon and the men of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, aka E-Company or Easy Company on their march to Germany. From their training to their battles at Normandy and Bastogne, their liberation of the Kaufering IV concentration camp to their taking of Hitler’s Eagle Nest. A great cast and great writing make this one of the best war movies ever made. But it is graphic in visuals and language. And parts of it may be hard to watch, but it is worth it.

What the men of E-Company did will never be forgotten. They are the heroes that helped the cause of freedom.

These brave men and women sacrifice so much in their lives so that others may enjoy the freedoms we get to enjoy everyday. For that, I am proud to call them Hero.

We Should Not Only Mourn These Men And Women Who Died, We Should Also Thank God That Such People Lived

This post is part of the Wednesday Hero Blogroll. For more information about Wednesday Hero, or if you would like to post it on your site, you can go here.

A new report from the Government Accountability Office identifies loopholes through which there have been over 800 gun buyers who are on the terrorist watch list. Read about it below and see a video.

800 Gun Buyers on Terrorist List?

The Congressional watchdog group, The Government Accountability Office (GAO), is reporting that there have been 800 gun buyers who were on the terrorist watch list. The list is maintained by the FBI and is a factor that is supposed to disqualify someone from buying a gun in the United States. The question is, of course, how did these 800 people slip through that crack and obtain guns.

The loophole in the law seems to be that being on the terrorist watch list is not one of the nine factors that used to determine someone’s eligibility to buy a gun. Factors on the list include things like having a felony conviction, a history of mental illness, etc. The GAO investigators found that background checks done on people attempting to buy guns between February 2004 and February 2009 revealed 900 people who were on the terrorist watch list. Out of those 900 people, only 98 were refused the purchase of a gun.

The current federal government is proposing to close the loophole that has allowed people whose names are on the list from buying guns.
