Cash for Clunkers Suspended

It didn’t take long for the ‘Cash for Clunkers’ program to run through the $1 billion set aside for the program. The program has been quite popular, which is understandable. It was set up to provide customers with incentives to trade-in their old, gas guzzling cars for new, more eco-friendly cars. One of the new federal government’s efforts to turn the American auto industry into something resembling the smaller, European cars that Al Gore and the environmentalist think we should all be driving. No more evil SUVs and big Ford trucks. You could drive around in a much more expensive, smaller and kind of dweeb-ish looking car of the future. For the sake of putting more money in the environmentalists pockets, I mean for the sake of saving the environment.

An Australian geologist, Ian Plimer, has said what we on the right already know; global warming is urban elite’s new religion. Plimer isn’t some crazy Christian as his critics might think. He is critical of creationism as well.

There are scientists and those in academia that do argue that man made global warming is a myth. The majority of those however, have been effectively silenced by the radical environmental movement. Plimer’s global warming urban elite’s new religion theory does have merit though.

E Company, 2nd Battalion

U.S. Army

The world lost one of it’s true heroes a couple of weeks ago. Darrell “Shifty” Powers passed away on June 17 of cancer. “Shifty” was part of the famed E Co/2/506 of the 101st Airborne Division. Easy Company. The Band Of Brothers.

“I loved everything about my daddy,” said Margo Johnson, daughter of SSgt. Powers. “He never bragged about what he did in the war. And for a lot of years, he never even talked much about what he did ? unless someone asked him about it. But he truly was a hero to me. Just like he’d been to the people who know him as a soldier in a [mini-series].”

These brave men and women sacrifice so much in their lives so that others may enjoy the freedoms we get to enjoy everyday. For that, I am proud to call them Hero.

We Should Not Only Mourn These Men And Women Who Died, We Should Also Thank God That Such People Lived

US Navy Warns, Increased Pirate Activity

The monsoon season will be over in four to six weeks and with better weather expected, we can also expect an increase in piracy on the high seas. The Gulf of Aden, off the coast of the lawless African country of Somalia, has been a hotbed of pirate activity in recent years. During the monsoon season there has been a slight decrease in attacks. Now the U.S. Navy is warning to expect an increase in attacks.

The Navy has advised mariners to use a designated corridor to transit the Gulf of Aden. That corridor is being patrolled by 30 warships and support aircraft from 16 nations.

The European Union’s anti-piracy force includes Germany, Spain, Britain, The Netherlands and France. Other countries assisting with monitoring the international waters off the coast of Somalia are the United States, Japan, Kenya and other east African nations who depend on access to those maritime routes to get and ship out goods from their own ports.

As the US Navy warns of increased pirate activity, anti-piracy forces are preparing to make the waters safer for mariners using the waterways.

Harry Patch

The oldest veteran of World War I died just a few days ago. He was U.S. Navy veteran Henry Allingham who died at 113-years-old. Now the oldest surviving British WWI vet has died. Harry Patch died on Saturday at the age of 111.

Patch was drafted into the Army when he was 18-years-old. Her served as an Army gunner. He was wounded at Passchendaele in Belgium in 1917, where more than 70,000 British soldiers died. He served in the Auxiliary Fire Service in World War II.

Mr. Patch was interviewed for television several times over the past ten years. It is during these interviews that he first started talking about the war. In one interview he described the horrors of a young soldier dying, begging his comrades to kill him and crying out for his mother. He described the young man’s final cry for his mother as ‘a cry of surprise and joy’. He said that he always remembered that death is not the end. His message was almost inevitably that the war was a terrible waste of lives for all sides.

He received an honorary degree from Bristol University. Patch’s Pride, a cider, is named for him. Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles and Prime Minister Gordon Brown paid tribute to Patch as a representative of a generation and the last survivor of the Tommies who fought in the trenches for England. The Queen and Brown will attend his funeral.

Patch was born in 1898 in Somerset. He had two older brothers. was a plumber by trade. He survived two wives and his two children. He was married to Ada Billington for 58 years, until her death in 1976. He then married Jean, who died in 1984. His two sons, from his first marriage, were Dennis Patch and Roy Patch.

Now that Allingham and Patch have died, there is only one surviving British veteran of World War I. He is Claude Choules, 108-years-old, who now lives in Perth, Australia.

Sarah Palin

On Sunday, June 26, 2009, Sarah Palin stepped down as Alaska’s Governor and stepped into a world of speculation as to her plans for the future. She gave a fiery speech, but no confirmation about where she goes from here. Read about it, see photos and view the Palin farewell speech video below.

After her surprise announcement that she would be stepping down as Governor of Alaska two weeks ago, Sarah Palin did just that yesterday. She transferred power to her Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell and he was sworn in as the new governor in a ceremony in Fairbanks, Alaska. In her farewell address she vowed to keep fighting for Alaska and Alaskans.

When Palin announced she would be leaving office on July 3, 2009, she cited the distractions of the continuous political attacks on her following her vice presidential campaign in 2008. She stated the frequent and unsubstantiated ethics complaints, legal actions and rising legal bills as preventing her from being able to perform her job with the focus the Alaskan people deserve. She is leaving the state in the very capable hands of Sean Parnell. She stated she felt it was her responsibility to avoid ‘unproductive politics-as-usual of a lame-duck session’. She also stated that she felt she could do more for Alaska and the United States without having to restrain herself as a representative of the State of Alaska.

Any of us who follow Palin know that many people still twist her words and claim they don’t understand what she very clearly stated as her reasons for stepping down.

“Some are still choosing not to hear why I made a decision to chart a new course to advance the state,” Palin said in a campaign-style speech laying out her achievements in office.

“With this decision, now I will be able to fight even harder for you, what’s right and for truth — and I have never felt that you need a title to do that,” Palin said.

In addition to listing the frivolous legal actions against her, she stated that she felt a ‘higher calling’ in which she could assist competent, ethical politicians of any party and help the country and Alaska on the national stage.

After having to deal with vicious attacks against not only herself, but against her family and particularly her children, she had a few words for the media in regards to the new governor.

“Democracy depends on you,” Palin said, “That’s why our troops are willing to die for you. So how about in honor of the American soldier you quit making things up?”

“Our new governor has a very nice family too, so leave his kids alone,” Palin said, drawing applause from the audience.

Other issues that Palin addressed in her parting address included the Second Amendment. She warned Alaskans to stand up against what she called the ‘anti-hunting’ message perpetuated by Hollywood celebrities:

“Patriots will protect our Second Amendment right to bear arms,” she said “Hollywood needs to know: we eat, therefore we hunt.”

She also warned about the dangers of big government:

“Be wary of accepting government largess,” she said. “It doesn’t come free, and often accepting it takes away everything that is free.”

We don’t know what Palin’s long term plans are. We do know that her first public appearance as a private citizen is scheduled for August 8, 2009 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California where she’ll give a speech. She’ll be writing a book, campaigning for candidates and gearing up for whatever her future plans are. Many of us hope that will be the Presidency in 2012.

Whatever her plans are, she maintains enormous popularity. Her earnest style, passion and charisma are exceptional. She’s intelligent, knowledgeable and has the courageous directness that is the stereotype of the American frontier woman. She’s not perfect, but she embodies many of the values, dreams, hopes and aspirations of the average American.

Without the restraints of holding public office she can do what she wants, or needs to do. There doesn’t seem to be limits to where she can go from here. As Sarah Palin steps down as Alaska’s governor, we’ll be watching to see where she goes from here.
