Australia Fire Destroys Almost 40 Homes

Fire officials have said that the western Australian outback brush-fires have been one of the worst bush-fires across the Australian outback. The fires have raged over Australia throughout their summer. There have been a series of catastrophic warnings as at leas three fires have raged through at least three Australian states.

The brush-fires were especially horrific last February (2009), when the fires claimed the lives of 173 people and destroyed thousands of homes in the southern Victoria state. The ‘Black Saturday’ fires resulted in Australian officials adopting the ‘catastrophic’ warnings to advice residents to evacuate homes when the bush-fires posed a serious threat to life and property. Until this week, the Western Australia fires had not claimed significant property and had not claimed lives. Sadly the fires claimed 3,00 hectares (7,400 acres) and three firefighters and a woman from the wheat-belt town of Toodyay suffered minor injuries.

If you are wondering what we call the new year, wonder no more. We shall call new year twenty ten, not two-thousand-ten. That’s the official words coming down from whoever decides such things. I have to admit, it is easier and less of a mouthful. So sounds good to me. Regardless of what you call it Happy New Year!!!!

happy new year 2009

Happy New Year!

2010 is not just the beginning of a New Year, it’s the beginning of a New Decade. Just think about all that’s happened in the past decade. This time ten years ago the biggest worry we had, or knew we had, was whether or not all our computers were going to crash as the clock turned to midnight and the new year of Y2K began. The computers didn’t crash, the world didn’t end and all was well. At least, as far as we knew. Of course, the Global War on Terrorism had been going on for a while. They were at war with us, but we didn’t know it yet. We were still innocent of the dangerous intentions of our enemies. Unfortunately, that innocence to the dangers of islamic fundamentalism was shattered on September 11, 2001. From that point on, the first decade of the new millennium was consumed with fighting terrorism throughout the world. Sometimes more intensely. Sometimes we put it on the back burner, went to the mall while our Soldiers fought alone on the other side of the world.

The Auld Lang Syne lyrics are known to most of us. We sing it at the strike of midnight on New Year’s Eve. As we celebrate the beginning of a New Year and kiss our beloved, we generally sing the song that has long been associated with that monumental event. You can see the lyrics, watch a video and read a little bit about the history of that tradition below.

Auld Lang Syne 2009

Happy New Year!

‘Auld Lang Syne’ is a song that is from the Robert Burns Scottish poem written in 1788. The song is sung to the tune of a traditional folk song, Roud #6294. It is generally sung as we ring in the New Year at the stroke of midnight. The modern day definition of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ is translated from the Scottish to the English as ‘for old times sake’ or ‘to the good old days’. Yes, we seem to think that Scottish, Irish and Welsh are the same as English, but they aren’t. When the British Empire became the United Kingdom, they tried to incorporate the Scottish, Welsh and Irish people into the Empire, but there was a time when they were all individual cultures with their own languages and their own cultures. Many continue to keep the memories of their own cultures and languages and work to keep them as they once were.

Rumors and spoilers are all over the internet as the final season of ‘Lost’ approaches. One of the looming questions that’s being asked is, is Naveen Andrews killed off ‘Lost’? Will the popular Sayid Jarrah no longer be on the Island as Season 6 finishes out the adventures of the Survivors on the mysterious Island?

naveen andrews 17

I found it a bit odd that there are rumors as to whether or not Sayid is killed off in the first episode of the last season of ‘Lost’. There are a couple of reasons I found it odd. One is that he was shot in the stomach last season. Didn’t we last see him leaning against the front of the van, bleeding profusely, looking pretty much worse for the wear and telling Jack that how to ignite the bomb because he wasn’t going to make it and therefore wouldn’t be able to ignite it himself? That seemed pretty much like a swan song to me. Another thing to consider is that if they WERE successful in detonating the bomb, as was certainly implied by the dramatic end of Season 5′s ‘white-out’ final scene, wouldn’t they ALL be dead?
