Lance Cpl. Mark A. Juarez of Bakersfield, California was identified as a Marine killed in action. The news apparently came as surprise to Juarez who said he was pretty sure the Pentagon had made a mistake. Later, the Pentagon admits the mistake and started putting the pieces together about how it happened. The wrong Marine was reported killed in an Afghanistan battle. In fact, Mark D. Juarez of San Antonio, Texas has been killed in a battle in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Both men served in the same battalion and regiment
Lance Cpl Mark D. Juarez, 23-years-old, died on January 9, 2010 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was a member of the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Mark D. Juarez lived in San Antonio, Texas most of his life. He was a graduate of Holy Cross High School.
The initial reports that it was Californian Mark A. Juarez, 22-years-old, were due to a clerical error. Apparently, the wrong file was pulled because of the similarity in their names. The first press reports listed his name, battalion, regiment, division, assignment and his base both in Bakersfield, California and in Hawaii where he is now based. However, the correct family was notified. The family of Texas Mark D. Juarez was notified in person of the loss of their son.
