Albert Gubay made a ‘Pact with God’ and became a billionaire. Or so he says. It seems that he was once a man with almost nothing and now has generated billions of dollars. Most the money he has made, he has donated to charity.
Gubay is a Roman-Catholic who made a ‘Pact with God’ when he was close to penniless, selling candy in Wales after World War II. He promised God that if he ever became rich, he would donate half his money to charity. And that is precisely what he is doing. In fact, sources say that he is donating MOST of his fortune to charity.
Gubay is the founder of the British supermarket chain ‘Kwik Save’. He later accumulated development properties in Liverpool and Manchester.
He has told the British Daily Mail that he is targeting donating $1.5 Billion to charities in the next few years. He says that he wants to carry on supporting good causes which has helped him be a good businessman. ‘Every penny wasted or lost reduces the pot available to the charity,’ he has said.
The 82-year-old Gubay was ranked at number 880 in the Forbes richest men in the world list. He is said to be worth $1.1 billion. His entire business empire has been placed in trust for the Albert Gubay Charitable Foundation. The net worth is estimated at $690 million.
Gubay lives on Isle of Man with his second wife. He has two children from his first marriage.
