New York Democratic Representative Anthony Weiner has gone after one of Glenn Beck’s advertisers, Goldline, claiming the ‘grossly overcharge’ and use Beck and other conservative pundits to promote buying gold out of fear of economic instability. On Tuesday, May 18, 2010, liberal New York Congressman Anthony Weiner held a press conference in which he went after ‘Goldline’, a company that sells gold coins and advertises on the Glenn Beck Show. Weiner denounced Goldline, saying that they over-charge and sponsor right-wing talk shows in order to sell their products to take advantage of the fears of the people that listen to those shows to sell their gold.
Weiner claims that the gold retailer has entered into ‘an unholy alliance with conservative pundits’, singling out Beck, Fred Thompson, Dennis Miller, Mark Levin and Laura Ingraham. He says that Goldline does this to play off the fear of inflation to sell their gold coins.
Now it’s Beck’s turn. He fired back on his show on over the past couple of days. He has accused Weiner of using Senator Joe McCarthy tactics. We are in full-fledged McCarthy Land now,’ he declared on his show on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning he said, ‘Now we have a congressman actually trying on the shoes of McCarthy.’ Also on Wednesday morning he requested that his listeners submit photos of Weiner with ‘his nose as a weiner’. He has also launched a website titled: Weiner Facts. The website seems to be dedicated to poking fun at Weiner and pointing out some suspiciously shady dealings the Congressman might have had in the past.
Not to be outdone by a conservative pundit, much less Glenn Beck, Weiner has responded to Beck’s rhetorical attack which was a response to Weiner’s initial attack. He says that Beck is trying to deflect attention from his promotion of Goldline and that ‘Goldline rips off consumers and Glenn Beck helps.’
For its part, Goldline says that Weiner is using the gold issue for his own political agenda. Goldline President and CEO Mark Albarian told Politico that he believes the Democrat’s investigation is ‘politically motivated’ and driven by ‘our relationship with Glenn Beck.’
