Ted Koppel Mourns Son
Former ABC ‘Nightline’ News Anchor Ted Koppel and his wife, Grace Anne Dorney Koppel, have issued a brief statement regarding the death of their son, Andrew Koppel.
Our son, Andrew, was a brilliant, caring man, whose loss we will mourn for the rest of our lives.
Ted and Grace Koppel have four children, Andrew, 40-years-old, was their only son.
Koppel was found dead in a New York City apartment after a day long drinking binge. Koppel met Russel Wimberly at Smith’s Bar & Restaurant, a Hells Kitchen bar. The two had some drinks together. Wimberly ended up taking Koppel to a friends apartment because. The friend, Belinda Caban, said that Koppel could barely walk and ‘wasn’t making any sense’. She told Wimberly to put him to bed to sleep it off. They put him in one of the bedrooms in the small apartment and checked on him during the night. About 1:30 a.m., they report that they couldn’t get him to respond to them. At that point they called 911, but it was too late. Emergency workers estimate he had been dead for about 4 hours by the time they were called.
Even though numerous friends have said that they never saw Koppel take a drink, he is thought to have had a long-time alcohol abuse problem.
Koppel lived in Queens, New York with his girlfriend Ilona Lieberman. The couple have a two-year-old daughter and Ilona is pregnant with their second child. He was appointed attorney for the city Housing Authority’s civil litigation division in 2001 and resigned the post in 2008. He graduated from Georgetown Law School.
The cause of death has yet to be determined. An autopsy was performed on Monday, but it can take up to weeks to get the results of toxicology tests. Police do not suspect foul play.
One doesn’t want to even imagine what it is like to lose a child. Our sympathy goes out to Ted Koppel as he mourns his sons death.
