Iraq gunmen steal salaries due to government workers. Authorities believe it may have been an inside job. They got away with $600K to fund insurgent military operations. Read more below.

BAGHDAD, IRAQ - NOVEMBER 17: Capt. Phil Hamilton (L), a US Army liaison to the Iraqi Security Volunteers (ISV), looks up after giving two hundred dollars to a leader of the group to give to a gunman November 17, 2007 in the Dora neighborhood of Baghdad, Iraq. The ISV members, a loosely-organized armed group that doesn't have uniforms yet, patrols the streets of the predominantly Sunni neighborhood under US backing and funding. The US troops credit the formation of the ISV, many of whom are presumed to be former anti-US insurgents, as a major factor in bringing down violence in Dora. Earlier today, Iraqi gunmen intercepted a vehicle carrying the salaries of Iraqi government employees in Western Baghdad. The gunmen stole nearly $600,000, about 700 million Iraqi dinars.

The robbers attacked the vehicle very shortly after it left the bank where it had been loaded with money. Police officials say that it appeared that the gunmen had been watching the truck. They believe they had the assistance of someone working for the government or for the bank.

Iraqi security forces said that no one was hurt in the robbery and they are still investigating the incident.

Its generally believed that insurgents have used similar recent robberies to fund their military operations.

There seems to have been a rise in violence in Baghdad as the U.S. is pulling the last of our combat troops out of Iraq. Just this week Barack Obama bragged that all of our Troops were pulling out of Iraq.

We’re keeping the promise that we’ve made when I began my campaign for the presidency,” Obama said Wednesday in Columbus, Ohio, where he was attending a Democratic fundraiser. “By the end of this month … our combat mission will be over in Iraq.

I’m not sure what ‘combat mission’ he is referring to other than just leaving. Hopefully, the Iraqi government will be able to hold things together and not see an increase in violence and al-Qaeda activities. Unfortunately, there seems to have already been an increase in violence and it appears insurgents have used these recent robberies to fund their military operations.

The video below is of a recent suicide bombing in Baghdad that claimed the lives of 61 people. That was last week. This week Iraq gunmen steal salaries of government employees. The $600K will probably be used to fund insurgent military operations.
