Combining ‘refute’ and ‘repudiate’, Sarah Palin invented the Merriam-Webster 2010 ‘Word of Summer’. That word is ‘refudiate’. The Sarah Palin word of summer refudiate gets the most online searches and is being accepted as an actual word, as opposed to Obama’s ‘wee-weed up’ coinage. Read about it below and see photos and a video of Jimmy Fallon having fun with Sarah Palin’s refudiation.

Its not unusual for people to misspeak or merge words in live interviews or even when speaking to crowds or writing messages on the internet. Such is the case of Sarah Palin who used the non-word ‘refudiate’ on two incidents over the summer. First she used it in an interview with Sean Hannity in which she said the President should ‘refudiate’ the accusations of racism against the Tea Party movement. She followed that with a quick tweet on her twitter account, using the word again.

Not one to shy away from those who criticize her or from her own mistakes she later tweeted that English is a living language while laughing at herself for her use of the word.

“Refudiate,” “misunderestimate,” “wee-wee’d up.” English is a living language. Shakespeare liked to coin new words too. Got to celebrate it!

Of course, the left immediate pounced on this and slammed her for comparing herself to Shakespeare and for being such an ‘idiot’ as to mis-use a non-word.

They got all ‘wee-weed up’ as Obama would say. But they didn’t have a problem with Obama making up words as he goes. He claims that treat him like a dog. If they do, then one much wonder what that means about how they treat Palin.

Now Merriam-Webster has named ‘Refudiate’ as the 2010 ‘Word of the Summer’. Apparently, after she used the non-word in July, there were more searches on online dictionaries for that word than any other word, real or made up.

Refute means to prove something wrong or deny its truth or accuracy. Repudiate means to refuse any connection with something or reject it as untrue or unjust. Either of those words – or a combination of them – word certainly get Palin’s point across.

Should Obama refute, repudiate or refudiate harsh and unjust language being used against people who disagree with his policies? Of course he should. Would people have remembered that Sarah Palin – Sean Hannity interview, or the point Palin was making, if she had not coined the word ‘refudiate’, probably not. And so, as you see, Palin Power hasn’t diminished. It has to drive the left absolutely insane with frustration.

John Morse, Merriam-Webster’s president and publisher said, ‘I think people immediately knew what she was trying to say because the words ‘refute’ and ‘repudiate’ were also being looked up very, very frequently. It’s an interesting blend, but no, ‘refudiate’ is not a real word’.

Other words of the summer include ‘inception and ‘despicable’, which got increases in online searches after movies came out using those words in their titles.

  1. Sounds like the new “ebonics” to me, Palinspeak. It is really quite amazing to be a prominent member of the GOP, and be freaking stupid enough to make up your own words that do not exist. Everyone makes mistakes of course, but it is worse yet to continue to use the non-words, and have your supporters brag about how popular your stupid words are. Arrogance and egotism run Sarah Palin, not intelligence.

  2. Tommy – does what you say apply to the words Barack Obama has made up? Or does it only apply to people on the right side of politics?

  3. You have a very childish argument, Beth. Your topic doesn’t mention Obama, does it? That’s the way children argue: “Susie got away with it, so why can’t I”.

I’m not sure Obama has made up any words resulting from lack of intelligence, as Palin has.

You mention: “It has to drive the left absolutely insane with frustration.”

Actually it is a tremendous boost to the left as it shows the GOP embracing ignorance. The GOP better come up with a person capable of a coherent sentence if they want to beat Obama.

  4. And here I was thinking your argument was childish!

I suppose its a matter of opinion whether made-up words are a result of a lack of intelligence or not. I guess you’ve never combined words?

Frankly, ‘refudiate’ makes more sense than ‘wee-weed up’.

  5. I wonder if Palin ever Cuntradicts herself?

  6. I, not long ago came throughout this site and also have enjoyed the content. I look forward to long term content and can definitely hyperlink to this and tell the folks I understand. Thank you.
