Today is the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the USS Cole. The Global War on Terrorism didn’t start on 9/11/2001 as many seem to believe. It started long before that with attacks on American embassies in Africa, the first World Trade Center bombing, the bombing of the USS Cole on October 12, 2000 as well as other seemingly random attacks throughout the world. Read about what has happened with the USS Cole in the 10-years since it was attacked and see photos and a video below.

USS Cole

On October 12, 2000, while the USS Cole was docked for refueling in Aden, Yemen, it was approached by a rubber boat packed with explosives. The suicide bombers in the rubber boat detonated the explosives tearing a huge hole in the side of the ship, killing 17 Sailors and wounding at least 37 others. A memorial to the seventeen Sailors who were killed can be found here.

The ship, also known as DDG 67, was recommissioned in 2002 and just recently returned from a deployment to Yemen to her home port of Norfolk, Virginia. The crew and others gathered to remember the suicide attacks on the Cole earlier today.

“We lost 17 of our shipmates that terrible morning 10 years ago, but they were far more than just our sailors,” said Adm. J.C. Harvey Jr., commander of U.S. Fleet Forces Command. “They were your fathers, your sons and daughters, your sisters and brothers. They coached Little League. They loved to work on cars. They ran track and played football. They acted in high school plays. They loved life, they loved living and they loved you.

“They were proud to serve,” he said. “… We remember them here in this special place, where we can keep them close.”

The U.S. Navy Sailors on the Cole worked for three days to save the ship and care for the injured. A testament to their courage and dedication is evidenced by the fact that the ship was saved, brought home and ‘healed’ to return to service. In addition, to the wounded who were rescued and brought home for treatment.

Most of the terrorists who have been linked to the attack on the USS Cole have been freed or are dead.

Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, known as al-Qaeda’s ‘maritime commander’ confessed to helping plot the Cole bombing, but charges against him were dropped as part of Barack Obama’s order to freeze military tribunals and his reformed military commission rules. He has still not gone to trial and there are no charges currently pending against him.

Jamal Mohammed Al-Badaw was found guilty and sentenced to death in a Yemeni court. He since escaped from prison, was recaptured and ultimately released for taking an oath to renounce terrorism. Fahd Quso was likewise found guilty, escaped, was recaptured and finally freed. He is rumored to have been killed in a drone attack on the Pakistan – Afghanistan border after rejoining the fight against our Soldiers. Maamoun Msouh was sentenced to eight-years in prison in Yemen for delivering money in preparation for the attack. Ali Mohamed Saleh and Murad al-Sirouri were both sentenced to five-years for forging documents for one of the suicide bombers. Mohammed Hamdi al-Ahdal (a.k.a. Abu Assem al-Makky) was sentenced to 18-years for his participation in the Cole attack as well as a 2001 gun-battle in Yemen.

Qaed Salim Sinan al-Harethi was said to have been al-Qaeda’s chief operative in Yemen. He was killed in 2002 when his car was hit by an air-to-ground hellfire missile.

The failure of the US to retaliate for the attacks on the USS Cole, the loss of life and limb, as well as the failure to even prosecute the perpetrators continues to be a sore point between the White House and the Pentagon and American people.

Sea lions and dolphins are being trained by the U.S. Navy to help fight the Global War on Terrorism. This program gives a whole new meaning to ‘Navy Seal’. The sea lions and dolphins are proving to be an effective Navy weapon against terrorism. There are some videos below.

On Tuesday, May 18, 2010, the Navy conducted exercises in ports along the California coast exhibiting the capabilities of the specially trained Navy Marine Mammals, based in San Diego. Over 3,000 local, state and federal responders participated in the annual two-day homeland security and disaster preparedness exercises. The drills that were conducted in the past couple of days included a fake attack on a container ship at the Port of Oakland, a bomb explosion at the Port of Redwood City and a terrorists attacks off the shore of Los Angeles, Long Beach, Sacramento and San Diego. The program was started in 2004 by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

There are 11 ports in California that handle 60 percent of the Nations container shipping traffic. Understandably, security in those ports is of the utmost importance not only to California, but to the nation. The sea mammals are capable of doing in minutes what it would take humans weeks to do. They can use their sonar to ‘see’ items underwater and are much faster than their human counterparts in maneuvering under water.

New high-tech naval ships have completed trials and after final inspection are ready for delivery to California for use by the U.S. Navy. The Littoral Combat Ships currently consist of the USS Freedom-class and the USS Independence-class.

USS Independence

The USS Independence is the second class of General Dynamics Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) to complete trials. The U.S. Navy announced earlier today that the USS Independence has completed trials in the Gulf of Mexico, off the shore of Alabama and will be deployed to California sooner than expected. The LCS are designed to operate close to shore (littoral zones). They are smaller, more agile vessels that can operate with stealth at high speeds and address anti-access and asymmetric threats in the littorals. They are another example of the US military addressing the demands of 21st century warfare.

Former United States Navy SEAL Ryan Job died in the early morning hours of Thursday, September 24, 2009 following reconstructive surgery to repair injuries he had received in combat in 2006 that had left him blind. His death was unexpected, especially in light of the fight for survival he had already waged.

Ryan and Kelly Job

Ryan Job was a USN SEAL until he was medically discharged following being wounded in action on August 2, 2006. He was on a rooftop in Ramadi, Iraq when a sniper’s bullet hit his rifle and the shattered pieces of the bullet struck his face. His eyes were damaged, leaving him completely blind. The courage, determination and strength of character that it takes to become a Navy SEAL proved to be the same characteristics that Ryan used to literally soar to new heights following his devastating injuries.

Somali Pirates

The US Navy warns of concerns there will be increased pirate activity off the coast of Somalia due to improved weather conditions in the area. Read about it below and see a photo and video.

Somali Pirates

US Navy Warns, Increased Pirate Activity

The monsoon season will be over in four to six weeks and with better weather expected, we can also expect an increase in piracy on the high seas. The Gulf of Aden, off the coast of the lawless African country of Somalia, has been a hotbed of pirate activity in recent years. During the monsoon season there has been a slight decrease in attacks. Now the U.S. Navy is warning to expect an increase in attacks.

The Navy has advised mariners to use a designated corridor to transit the Gulf of Aden. That corridor is being patrolled by 30 warships and support aircraft from 16 nations.

The European Union’s anti-piracy force includes Germany, Spain, Britain, The Netherlands and France. Other countries assisting with monitoring the international waters off the coast of Somalia are the United States, Japan, Kenya and other east African nations who depend on access to those maritime routes to get and ship out goods from their own ports.

As the US Navy warns of increased pirate activity, anti-piracy forces are preparing to make the waters safer for mariners using the waterways.

USS John S. McCain

So much for talking with terrorists. Barack Obama’s defense department has ordered the USS John McCain to intercept a North Korean warship named “Kang Nam” suspected of carrying weapons of mass destruction. The threat of an Obama War comes one day after North Korea is reportedly ready to fire a missile at Hawaii. See the video and photos below.

USS John S. McCain

USS John S. McCain versus Kang Nam: Obama War?

The USS John S. McCain is an Aegis guided missile destroyer in the US Navy, Arleigh Burke class (Flight I), named after the father and grandfather of Senator John McCain, John S. McCain, Jr. and John S. McCain, Sr. They were both 4-star Admirals and decorated war heroes like the Senator. The ship’s port is Yokosuka Naval Base in Yokosuka Japan. This is the same ship that collided with a Chinese submarine on June 11th, 2009.

One hopes that world realities are beginning to sink in with this White House, where it was once hoped that youthful exuberance would substitute for learned diplomacy. Not so fast.

The reality is that bad guys in the world want to stir up trouble to pacify their own populations. They need bogeymen like the United States of America to serve as foils for their own problems. The recipe is used in all totalitarian states from Iran to North Korea. They don’t want to “talk” with Barack Obama. They want a weak-kneed president who let’s them get away with hostility.

Many analysts watched in alarm during the election season when Barack Obama proposed talking without preconditions with dictatorial regimes. Such a proposal can only come from an extreme moral relativist, one who puts his own democratic country on an even playing field with the darkest nations on earth. It ignores the reality of our superior position and influence, and the motivations of our enemies.

So the navy destroyer USS John McCain is steaming toward destiny with the Kang Nam, a North Korean ship, on the precipice of an Obama War, a date with destiny that would have been avoided with a stronger, consistent message from the United States. Godspeed to the brave men aboard. May they be wiser than their commander in chief.

The USS Port Royal, based in Honolulu Hawaii ran aground while entering the harbor on Thursday night, February 6th. All crew members are safe and there is no evidence of a terrorist act or hostile cause. Read the details and see video footage from the ship.

The ship is a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser which ran aground on a sand spit just offshore from Honolulu International Airport. Tug boats were dispatched to the scene but have been unable to lodge her free. There are 360 crew members aboard.

The USS Port Royal cost $1 billion dollars to build, the 27th ever built and last one made in her class. Of course $billion apparently is not a lot of money anymore. Obama’s stimulus bill could build 1,000 of them while employing millions of workers to make more navy boats.

The ship made international news in 2008 as one of three ships that were threatened by small Iranian machine-gunners. Radio threats received from the Iranians included “I am coming at you. You will explode in a couple of minutes.” The ship had authorization to fire on the threat but the Iranians fled at the last second.

The USS Port Royal is mentioned in a Tom Clancy novel, but it did not run aground in the book. Someone is going to be in trouble for this…
