Brussels to Scotland: Pipe Down!

Bagpipes are a sound that many of us associate with our ancestry. Its part of the Scottish heritage, but Brussels is telling Scotland to quieten down the pipes!

Bagpipes: Scotland the Brave (Video)

Oh, for the love of Socialism!!!! The European Union has decided to put a ban on noise. As with most Socialist organizations, they know what’s best for everybody and make it their business to dictate behavior and common sense. I think they’d control people’s thoughts if they could.

I read at Boston Maggie they have put a ban on noise and have sent word that the bagpipes of Scotland are going to have to tone it down.

THEIR high-pitched skirl has put fear into the hearts of Scotland’s enemies and sent sensitive tourists reaching for the cotton wool.

Now, however, the bagpipes are to be quietened by an edict from Brussels.

From this month, pipers must adhere to strict volume limits or risk breaking European Union health and safety laws. Bands have been ordered to tone down or wear earplugs to limit noise exposure to 85 decibels.

Typically, a pipe band played at full volume peaks at 122 decibels outdoors, noisier than the sound of either a nightclub or a chainsaw, which rises to 116 decibels. [source]

When the English conquered Scotland they tried to eradicate any elements of Scottish culture. They outlawed kilts, bagpipes and Gaelic. The English hunted the Scots down throughout the highlands to enforce the laws in a real effort to completely wipe out their national identity so they’d quit giving the English so many dadgume problems!

The Scots managed to hang onto they’re culture even under those dire circumstances. They even overcame the discrimination to the point that they became the most elite military force for England …. wearing kilts!

As the bagpipe players say, you can’t play bagpipes quietly. I hope they win their argument and keep the bagpipes playing. Do we really want to live in such a vanilla world that we can’t tolerate the loudness of color, sound and culture? I don’t.

Play on …..

Prince William Uses British Military Vehicles for His Own Amusement

Prince William, second in line for the British throne, seems to think what belongs to Britain belongs to him and apparently doesn’t understand the meaning of military discipline.

Prince Charles and Prince William
Prince Charles and Prince William

I’m not a critic of the British royal family. In fact, I think they are kind of interesting. Its cool that there is still a European royal family that at least pretend to be enthroned. Its a throw-back to days long gone and all that. Still, sometimes their complete lack of having any limits in their lives is pretty astounding.

As I understand it, since Prince William will undoubtedly be King one day, he is supposed to get training in every branch of the military service. His most recent training has been with the Air Force. He’s been learning to fly planes and helicopters and the like. He was awarded his wings recently.

In the past month there have been two incidents (that people know about) of Prince William using Chinook helicopters for his own pleasure. Prince William flew a Chinook to London to pick up his brother, Prince Harry. Then he flew the two of them to the Isle of Wight for a weekend of partying with their cousin, Peter Phillips who is Princess Anne’s son. Another time he took a Chinook he was training in to his girlfriend, Kate Middleton’s house. He practiced landing and taking off from a field behind her house.

The problem is that he seems to think that the military vehicles that are acquired at the expense of the tax paying citizens of the United Kingdom are his very own personal play things. Or perhaps its that his superior officers are either afraid to tell the future King that he can’t do these things or are so enamored with his royalty that they approve such misuse of military vehicles. Either way, there’s something terribly wrong when Prince William is allowed to use helicopters and airplanes for his personal use.

Meanwhile, British troops in Afghanistan are dealing with a shortage of Chinooks and other equipment. But why should a little thing like that bother a future King. He’ll never have to deal with shortages when he’s deployed. Oh wait. He won’t be deployed so there really isn’t a need to worry about it at all!!!!

I do think it would do him a world of good to have to actually do something with all the training he is getting. He should have to be deployed. It would help him grow up and certainly would help him get a better understanding of what the troops, who will one day be under his command, have to deal with. A callus or two on those perfectly manicured hands would make him feel better about himself as a man.

After all, that’s how his ancestors became Kings in the first place.

Spanish Mothers Can’t Sale Nude Calendars!

What on earth is the world coming to when Spanish women can’t sell nude calendars! Not only can’t they sale them, but they are stuck with 5,000 unsold calendars and have ended up in debt for their efforts.

Seven middle-aged Spanish mothers who posed for a tongue-in-cheek nude calendar - a fundraiser for their children’s tiny, rural school - are now saddled with debt and 5,000 unwanted copies.

One of the photos shows the mothers with Christmas tinsel as their only garb - no private parts on view. Other goofy poses include a shotgun-toting mother wearing only a fox pelt and kneeling on a table, and another shows a woman covering her body with a red umbrella on a picnic table.

They got the idea to raise funds by posing nude from some British counterparts who started the nude calendar posing trends. The British women raised over a million pounds for their charity and have a hit movie about them, Calendar Girls.

This HAS to be humiliating for the Spanish ladies!

The women acknowledge being rank amateurs in publishing and advertising, and because of a miscue with a distributor they missed out on the Christmas shopping rush. Now, sales of the $8 calendar have dried up and they owe a printer nearly $16,000.

“The sad part for us is figuring out what to do with them because it is not something you can recycle,” said Rosa Garin, 36, one of the models in Serradilla del Arroyo, a village of 400 people in northern Salamanca province.

The hamlet is a snapshot of rural Spain: quaint but graying, with retirees accounting for 75 per cent of the population. The arrival of a new family with small children is greeted like manna from heaven. Funding for services is scant.

Elite French Fighting Force Demonstrates French Technology

Its seems so unfair that everyone makes fun of the French all the time. I know, I’ve been guilty of it myself, but I feel very badly about it. I really do.

I know the French haven’t won a war since the Norman Invasion of 1066. That’s when the French warriors all moved to England and apparently took the warrior DNA with them. Whoops. I did it again. I didn’t mean to make fun of them again. What was I saying? Oh yeah, just because they haven’t won a war since 1066 and just because their immediate response to any kind of aggression seems to be immediate surrender followed by wine and cheese, doesn’t mean they deserve to be the butt of jokes throughout the world.

Happily, I have found the following video that is proof positive that the French still have that warrior gene somewhere deep inside of them. Perhaps it will resurface. Maybe its resurfacing even as I type this. They are actually quite fearsome Soldiers. It could very well be that one of the best kept secrets in the world is that these French men might possibly be the most dangerous men on earth!

Victoire pour la France!!

Muslim Extremists are Trying to Shut Down Dutch Film on Islamic Fascism

Islamic Protesters

There’s just a big brouhaha going on because of the Geert Wilders film, Fitna. Obviously, a lot of people saw that coming and many people and groups tried to stop it from being released from the get-go.

I watched the film and saw acts of terrorism committed by islamic jihadists against the West and Western interest. The film didn’t exaggerate the atrocities and in fact barely scratched the surface of the outrageous behavior of the jihadists. So what’s the problem? The problem apparently is that we are not supposed to acknowledge that jihadists are jihadists. I guess we are supposed to pretend the are a loving group of people who are just badly misunderstood.

Or …. as a few commenters on my previous post have pointed out … we should all just admit that America is the big bad bully in the world and its all our fault for everything the Jihadists do around the world to anyone who does not submit to their will.

I don’t think I’ll do that, thank you very much. The jihadists have made no secret of their goal of destroying us and to pretend that is not true is akin to Chamberlain declaring that Hitler wasn’t so bad after all and there’d be peace in his time. He was wrong and the people who excuse the behavior of these evil doers are just as wrong and are part of the problem.

Its hard to blame the commenters and the ‘moderate muslims’ who refuse to condemn this behavior or who even defend the behavior. After all, look what happens to any muslims who DO speak out against jihadists in the name of islam … if they aren’t murdered they have to go into hiding. Just ask Ayaan Hirsi Ali what happens to muslims who speak out.

The jihadists are pulling out all the stops to intimidat the West into suppressing any information being distributed to the people that reminds them of the atrocities committed in the name of islam.

Its hard for me to believe how badly we are being played. On the one had they openly tell us they will destroy us and make no secret that they are developing the technology and weapons that can and will do just that. The examples of this are almost endless. And still we pretend that they are not a threat and would rather blame ourselves than name the enemy what he really is.

When did we become such cowards????? It is certainly not our heritage to be cowardly, yet we seem to have lost our will to protect our own interests. We tsk-tsk about beheadings, but then are outraged when someone reminds us that the ones doing the beheadings are islamic. Some even feel sorry for them when they are killed by our Troops!

Here’s a little bit of what’s going on now …..

I already posted that the courageous European Union has condemned the movie. They even went so far as to state the the whole concept of free speech is probably over-rated. Oh yeah? Tell our Founding Fathers that and every man who has died in every war defending our freedoms. COWARDS!

Muslim nations condemn Dutch Koran film

Geert Wilders, leader of the anti-immigration Freedom Party, launched his short video on the Internet on Thursday evening, prompting an al Qaeda-linked website to call for his death and increased attacks on Dutch soldiers in Afghanistan.

“The correct Sharia (Islamic law) response is to cut (off) his head and let him follow his predecessor, van Gogh, to hell,” a member of Al-Ekhlaas wrote on the al-Qaeda affiliated forum, according to the SITE Institute, a U.S.-based terrorism monitoring service.

The 57-nation Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) said: “The film is solely intended to incite and provoke unrest and intolerance among people of different religious beliefs and to jeopardize world peace and stability.” [If they didn't blow up people, fly planes into buildings, behead people and kill anyone who disagrees with them they wouldn't be subjected to films about what they do. They are who jeopardize world peace and stability, not a film about what they do.]

Of course the UN had to weight in ….

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the film as “offensively anti-Islamic” and U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour said it was “hateful.”

Its not surprise that Iran disapproves …

Iran called the film heinous, blasphemous and anti-Islamic, and Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation and a former Dutch colony, said it was an “insult to Islam, hidden under the cover of freedom of expression.”

Network Solutions suspended the website that Geert Wilders had reserved to publish his film.

An American network provider Sunday said it had suspended a website that Dutch MP Geert Wilders had reserved to post his anti-Islamic film, which has sparked wide condemnation and fears of a backlash.

LiveLeak removed the video because of threats to their staff. Their statement is here. Gates of Vienna has a list of sites on which you can still see the video. You can view it at Jawa, LGF, Pat Dollard, Atlas Shrugs and Menorah Blog.

Fitna: Geert Wilder Video on Islam

This is the long anticipated movie about islam from Dutch MP Geert Wilder. The movie depicts recent acts of terrorism against Western society by islamic jihadists as related to verses from the Koran. We have been ‘protected’ from the images that so shockingly illustrate the acts of the jihadists against us. The images are graphic, bloody and hard to look at. Its the ugliness of islam and its impact on our society.

Islamofascists have tried to keep this film from being published. They are upset that the West might see them for what they really are. They will and do claim this isn’t islam. They claim this is racist and prejudicial. They claim it will give islam a bad name. I submit that if islam doesn’t want to be seen this way they should take control of their own society. I islam doesn’t like being depicted as violent and cruel bloody savages who are intent on conquering the world, then they should stop acting like violent and cruel bloody savages who are intent on conquering the world.

These acts are their acts, not ours. These are things done in the name of islam. When will we quit pretending we are somehow responsible for what they do?

**Warning** - Graphic acts of violence and the results of those acts. Some of this video is very difficult to watch. - **Warning**

Demonstrations in Denmark

Danish Demonstrations

The Danes are getting really tired of their flag getting burned. The website called Stop Islamisation Of Europe (SIOE) has a report on a demonstration that was held in Denmark.

Just across the street autonomes and muslims were gathering. They were seperated from us by a line of riot police. The autonomes and muslims began to shout at us in a way that we are used of them. Meanwhile the number of people on the square was growing. Anders was doing lots of interviews for lots of press. The autonomes and muslims across the street, maybe a 100 to 130 became more agressive.

One Danish muslim completely freaked out and had to be pushed back by three policemen. The autonomes were shouting to us and were calling us racists, nazists and fascists like a bunch of idiots. They also constantly gave us the finger.

The muslims shouted something about Satan and kept on repeating it. They also shouted something in Arabic, we have no idea what they were shouting at us but we don’t think it was anything nice. A young muslim, he looked like an imam, was really screaming and yelling through a megaphone. He constantly repeated the name mohammed. Both autonomes and muslims were going completely mental and were very agressive.

One reporter tried to do an interview with them and she was called a hooker and the muslims spit on the street, only because she tried to hear their side of the story.

The next demonstration will be in Copenhagen on May 31st.

Search for Australian Ship Discovers the German Vessel that Sank It

HMAS SydneyThere seems to be a run on finding things lost from previous wars. The Australian Naval battle cruiser, HMAS Sydney, was sunk in 1941 by a German raider. There has been a search for the HMAS Sydney without success. However, the German raider was found on Saturday giving renewed hope that the Sydney will also be found.

Both the HMAS Sydney and the German vessel, the DKM Kormoran, sank after a battle off Australia’s western coast on Nov. 19, 1941 during World War II.

None of the 645 men aboard the Sydney survived. But 317 of the Kormoran’s 397 crew rowed to the Australian coast in life boats and were taken prisoner. The 9,500-ton Kormoran had been disguised as a Dutch merchant ship when it opened fire on the Sydney.

“Finding the Kormoran is one big step forward (to finding the Sydney),” said Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

The wreck was found Saturday 500 miles north of the Western Australia state capital Perth, he said.

The government-funded $3.9 million search for the Sydney began two weeks ago and is headed by U.S. shipwreck hunter David Mearns.

Mearns was involved in finding the wrecks of the British battle cruiser the HMS Hood and the DKM Bismarck, the German battle ship that sank her in the North Atlantic in 1941.

The Sydney weighed in at 6,600 metric tons (7,300 U.S. tons), making it the largest vessel from any country to be lost with no survivors during the war.

The fate of the ship and its crew has remained an enduring mystery, though a parliament inquiry into the tragedy in 1999 accepted accounts by Kormoran survivors that they last saw the ship in flames and heading toward Perth.

An Amazing World War I Site Has Recently Been Excavated

World War IBeneath the northern French town of Arras is a labyrinth of tunnels and caves that were used to help the allies defeat the Germans in The Great War. Those elaborate subterranean passageways hide an army of 25,000 British Soldiers right beneath the unsuspecting German army. From their hiding place beneath the front lines of that long ago war, the British were able to launch battles and raids from deep within the enemy territory.

In the years after the war these caves and tunnels were forgotten and built over. They have recently been rediscovered and escalated giving us an unequaled look into the world of the early 20th century warfare.

Next to a suburban supermarket, beneath a former camp site, the public can take a glass elevator from the 21st century straight down to the world of Tommy Atkins and bully beef.

Clever lighting and sound effects have created a mesmerising insight into life on the Western Front.

Accompanied by a bilingual expert and an excellent audioguide, parties of 20 are able to weave their way through an authentic slice of the Great War.

ArrasAt the time, the Great War was considered the War to End All Wars. Of course, now we know that it was the war that began a series of wars in the 20th century. They didn’t know that then. It is only in retrospect that we are able to see how one lead to the other. Its only in retrospect that we are able to learn the hard lesson that history taught us from that war. One of those lessons being that not ending the war by defeating the enemy only left us to have to fight the same enemy another day. It seems apparent to me that every war of the 20th century was a result of a lack of a proper ending to that war, including the Vietnamese and Korean wars. Yet, that war was quickly overshadowed by the second World War and many of the lessons learn were lost under the much larger and deadlier World War II.

The Great War was the first modern war in which it was learned that frontal assaults were nothing less than suicidal.

The generals had learned a few lessons from the 1916 Battle of the Somme. Chief among them was the fact that frontal assaults on well-defended enemy trenches and artillery were mass suicide.

As the Western Front stalemate continued from the North Sea to the Swiss border, the French hatched a grand plan to win the war in 48 hours. They would smash through the German lines along the River Aisne in the spring of 1917.

The British would play their part with a colossal pre-emptive strike around Arras 50 miles to the north. A dazzling plan then took shape.

For almost a century, the ingenuity of the Battle of Arras has remained lost to our collective memories.

Today, Arras is an unremarkable town an hour’s drive south of Calais. Most British tourists whizz past it on the autoroute as they drive to Paris and beyond. But if they look out of the window, they will glimpse some clues to the carnage in these parts.

Beautifully tended Commonwealth War Graves are dotted on either side. Soaring to the east is the stirring Canadian memorial to the 11,000 men who died in the heroic capture of Vimy Ridge. It is often said that Canada came of age as a nation that day.

Arras was a forlorn and battered frontier town. In 1914, it had been captured by the Germans, recaptured by the French and then put under British control to allow the French to concentrate elsewhere. In 1916, it was a shell of a place.

Civilians had been evacuated and British occupied the ruins while the Germans, who held the higher ground, sat to the East lobbing shells into the town.

It was just another stalemate situation on the Western Front. But, unseen by the Germans, something extraordinary was going on under the ground.

Arras

The plan to utilize the tunnels, sewers, cellars and caves created during the time of the Romans occupation was nothing short of ingenious. New Zealand Tunnelers were brought in to connect the caves, cellars and sewers with tunnels. In the end, it housed 25,000 allied troops. Five Hundred New Zealanders got the job done in record time. The entire plan was executed in complete secrecy.

Can you imagine the logistics of getting 25,000 soldiers down into those caves through a bakery? They managed to do it undetected. And there they waited until the appointed date to strict the Germans, Easter Sunday, 5.30am on April 9, 1917. They took the Germans completely by surprise.

The German guns, already hammered by their British counterparts, had little time to readjust their sights and bring fire down on an enemy which was suddenly a mile closer than anyone had expected.

There was heavy fighting, of course. Thousands of brave men, like Harry Holland, did not survive the day, but the losses were nothing like the Somme.

Germans surrendered bootless and still in night clothes. Up in the northern sector, around Vimy Ridge, the Canadians faced much stiffer opposition but they, too, had been helped by their own intricate tunnel arrangements leading up to the German lines.

Day One of the Battle of Arras was, without doubt, a great success. Within a couple of days, the Allies had advanced eight miles. By the woeful standards of that war, it was like capturing a continent.

The war went on, but the Battle of Arras was a grand success in the context of the times. As the war and time went on, the tunnels were closed down, Arras was rebuilt and people forgot that day of bravery, sacrifice and grander. Some Frenchmen remembered the caves and used them again for shelter just a few short years later during the long hard days of World War II. Then, they were forgotten. In 1990, Alain Jacques began to investigate what had happened in that area during the Great War. He became curious when he couldn’t find an answer as to why there were English words written on pillars and walls in that area. There was no written record of what had happened there. Studying the archives, he began to understand why places in that area were named names like ‘Wellington’. That led to beginning of the excavations.

Arras

He had discovered the Blenheim quarry. Over the subsequent years, he would find much more. In 1994, a gas pipe repair led him to Thompson’s Cave. Gradually, he worked out where the soldiers had emerged to meet the enemy.

His problem was that post-war Arras had simply expanded over the entire network and out into what had once been No Man’s Land.

Much of the network has collapsed, much else is extremely unsafe and French laws meant that there could be no question of opening any museum underneath private homes.

Along with Arras’s director of tourism, Jean-Marie Prestaux, Alain worked out that just one quarry - Wellington - had the potential for safe public access because it lay under a council-owned campsite.

Now, 18 years after Alain’s first discovery, a £3 million visitor centre and a lift have been constructed. The Carriere Wellington, underground home of the Suffolk Regiment 91 years back, is, finally, open to the world.

“Everyone knows the Somme and Verdun,” says Jean-Marie as he shows me round his beloved project.

“Now people from all over the world will learn of Arras. Even most French people know nothing of all this.”

When I finally resurface, blinking and speechless, into the daylight, I ask Alain to show me where the inhabitants of Wellington would have emerged on that freezing dawn in 1917.

He takes me down several suburban streets, until we reach a crossroads on the Rue St Quentin.

“Here,” he says, “this is where they came out to fight the enemy.”

The scene could hardly be more poignant. Full of fun and laughter, it is a children’s playground. Wherever he may be, I am sure poor Harry Holland would approve.

I hope to visit there and tour those tunnels the next time I’m in Europe.
