Pennsylvania Democratic Congressman John Murtha has been awarded the highest civilian honor by the Navy, the Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award. This action has created a firestorm of controversy, primarily because of Murtha’s role in undermining the Marine Corps with false accusations in order to win a political campaign. Read about it below and see a photo and video.
Its hard to fathom why John Murtha has been repeatedly re-elected by his constituency in Pennsylvania. Okay, I get it. He brings a lot of pork back to his district. But one does wonder at what point even the money he brings in not make up for the shame he brings on himself and the Pennsylvania district he has been elected 19 times to represent?
During the most resent Presidential election, he called the people of his own district ‘racist’ and ‘rednecks’ and still they re-elected him. I really had hoped that even if the people of his district could over look his disdain for the military, his history of corruption, his overall embarrassing lack of ethics or hesitance to bleed taxpayers dry to contribute to his own wealth. Apparently, his saving grace is that he funnels enough tax payer money back to Pennsylvania that they are willing to over look his numerous flaws as a human being.
But why, in heaven’s name, would Navy Secretary Donald Winter award John Murtha the Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award? Winter did this on March 13th, one of his last acts as Secretary, just before he left office. There just has to be a reason to explain it that we aren’t privy to. Winter awarded Murtha the Navy’s highest civilian honor citing Murtha as “courageous leadership, vision, and loyalty to the men and women of the Department of the Navy”. Murtha is Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee’s defense panel. Maybe that has something to do with it. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what kind of position Winter gets after leaving office.
Here’s the real irony of John Murtha being awarded this honor. It is awarded to ….
… “those extraordinary cases where individuals have demonstrated exceptionally outstanding service of substantial and long term benefit to the Navy, Marine Corps, or the Department of the Navy as a whole.”
John Murtha? The irony of that is astounding.
Murtha released this statement after receiving the award.
“I’m proud of the service and sacrifices our troops are making, and I’m honored to receive this distinguished award from the Navy,” commented Murtha. “We have an obligation to ensure that our men and women in uniform have the most modern equipment, effective training, first-class medical care, and family advocacy resources.”
Disgusting hypocrite.
